What are the kids into?

I haven’t updated on what the kids are up to these days so I thought this beautiful but terribly hot Sunday would be a nice time to settle in with a cup of tea and do that!

Smilie Baby is now 4 and a wonderfully wild little preschooler. She has a passion for learning but only on her own terms and we try to respect that it is the phase she is in right now. She has taught herself to spell many words and is working on reading. While we homeschool we do not tend to push when our children are little! We learned with our oldest daughter just how much that can backfire! So we follow our children’s interest and help them thrive. Our 4 year old is learning a great deal on her own mostly because of apps but I will have to share about those another day. She loves pretend playing to be Dora, or more so Swipper…. I can’t say I love the part where she swipes the book I am reading and dashes off with them laughing hysterically telling me I will never find it now! Outside she loves to run and play with the hose, give her little car baths, and has a great eye for detail. She points out things many of us seem to miss, like interesting bugs, chickens eggs, and rainbows!

Storm Baby is 6 loves lap learning. By lap learning I mean she loves to be in your lap learning about something with you rather than on her own with a book or her laptop or a tablet. She set a goal to learn about every African animal this year and I think it will be more challenging than I can even picture at this point depending on how literally she wants to take the word “every” animal! She adores animals and some days I swear she makes more animal sounds than she does human ones! She still sucks her fingers but she is working on it. She knows she wants to quit but in a world with so much going on and a little one so sensory sensitive her finger sucking is comforting to her and we don’t want to cause her further issues by pushing too hard. Someone remind me though that she will not be doing this in college? Sometimes attachment parenting and peaceful parenting are hard! Most times though such parenting styles make life a lot smoother. The kids really do not fight with one another much and I think it is because of how we are raising them!
