Saving Your Environment

GUEST POST

These days, there is a lot of focus on taking steps to help the environment in our everyday lives, but sometimes this is easier said than done. However, there are many simple ways you can make savings around the home and help the environment at the same time, without causing yourself any unnecessary stress.
Water Butts and Compost Heaps
If you spend a great deal of time in your garden, you will know that it takes a lot of water and nutrients to get everything growing big and strong. But it can be expensive to use your hose to keep your plants thriving and store-bought compost can be very pricey as well. Instead, invest your money in a water butt and compost bin and you’ll soon reap the benefits. Water butts fill up on rain water ready for use whenever you need it, and compost is a great way of feeding your garden and disposing of household waste.
Solar Panels
Once a rare sight in the UK, solar panels have now become a popular and cost-effective way of helping the environment and cutting down on bills. Solar panels capture energy from the sun during the day, even when it is cloudy, and then convert the energy into electricity, which can be used to run appliances and lighting. It is also one of the greenest, cleanest ways to generate energy for your home.
Walk/Bike to Work
Not only is walking or cycling to work beneficial to the environment, it is also great for your mind and body as well. Getting out in the fresh air and enjoying some exercise is a great way to start your day and will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Plus, you will save money on petrol, cut out the hassle and stress of traffic jams and get fit in the process. It’s a win-win situation! And you don’t have to stick to your morning commute either – get out and about at the weekends and enjoy some of the lovely bike paths that the UK has to offer.
Grow Your Own Veg
There is something deeply satisfying about growing, cooking and eating your own veggies and it is a fantastic way to save money and help the environment as well. Even if you don’t have a garden yourself or need a bigger space, you can still join in. There are a number of communities and groups across the country, such as Bruderhof, that grow vegetables together. See if your local allotment has an organisation formed to grow vegetables for everyone in the neighborhood  and if it doesn’t  why not start one up?

Drinking bottled water may be good for you but is can be expensive and creates a lot of packaging waste. If you want to save the environment while sticking with purer water, then invest in a filter instead. This way you can enjoy the water you want to drink but without creating the waste that ends up in the bin.
