Tips for keeping your home safe without creating excess waste

Keeping your home and your family safe at all times is a top priority for all families. There are many ideas floating around on how to make your home more secure, such as leaving the lights on, using high-powered flood light outside your home and using old-fashioned video cameras to monitor activity around your home.

While many of these ideas are effective and widely used, what if you want options that are better for the environment? Leaving lights and cameras on all day can use high amounts of energy and create unnecessary waste in the environment. If your family prefers a more “green” approach, look to this list for a few ideas on how to keep your home secure in an eco-friendly way.

Upgrade your home security system

Many home security system companies, such as Austin, TX Home Security, have made some eco-friendly updates to their systems recently. Now might be the best time to upgrade your old security alarm system or invest in a new system to take advantage of the new features, such as equipment made from recycled materials and more energy-efficient technologies.

Install motion-detecting flood lights outside your home

Instead of turning yard lights or energy-burning flood lights on outside your home all night, or even continuously while you are away, opt for the green option. Motion-detecting lights will only turn on when motion is detected, so as you approach your home, you will be flooded with light and able to see the door easily.

In the case of an intruder, if they try to approach your home and are suddenly bombarded with light, they with either by caught by you or scared enough to abandon their mission and leave your home in peace.

Look into solar powered options for your home security

There are many new options, in flood lights especially, for those of us who prefer solar power. Use solar powered, motion-activated flood lights around your home to increase your protection without increasing your energy bill. Using solar powered lights will even lower your energy bill in the long run, adding an extra financial benefit for your family.

Many of the new home security systems also offer solar powered options for their equipment to be installed in your home. If you are looking to upgrade or install a new home security system, look for companies that offer such options.

Enlist the help of your neighbors when you are away

Using your neighbors while you are away from home for protection instead of energy-depleting lights and cameras is an eco-friendly and inexpensive option. Have a neighbor monitor your home, pick up mail and newspapers and even park an extra vehicle in your driveway while you are away to throw intruders off the tracks and trick them into thinking you are still at home. Of course your family will need to return the favor when your neighbors decide to go on vacation, but the task is a small price to pay when it comes to your family’s home security needs.

Great tips and suggestions. I love the motion sensor lights, I need to add these to our house.
