Homeschooling Art Fun

I have been asked many times over the years how one homeschools a subject they are not nay good at. Be it math or music or art my response is always the same; find someone who is good at it. This could be getting a tutor or online teacher or local classes or great curriculum.

To help meet our art requirement and because it is just such an important and wonderful subject we add Kelly Kits. Kelly kits come in the mail each month with a lesson plan by age group and different media and skill tasks. From painting to sculpting. Art for today was also part of a science lesson having to do with the life cycle of the butterfly. It came with step by step drawing instructions and tips on butterflies and moths. It also explained something I didn’t know.

You can mix a table spoon of sugar with a 1/4 cup of water and soak chalk in it, dry the chalk a bit and the color of the chalk is then brighter and more smooth to use on paper.

The kit costs $9.99 a month in the USA, $19.99 for delivery to Canada. In each kit are the needed things for the lesson. In this case it was chalk, a black marker, brown paper, and the instructions. While clearly you can get the supplies cheaper than $10 what your really paying for is the help of an artist to help your own little artist thrive.

All told the lesson took about 45 minutes with 3 kids (A teen friend of my oldest daughter joined us too!) The kids got a review of the life cycle of the butterfly and learned some things none of us know, like how the fastest moth can fly 25 miles an hour! All and all the kids did wonderfully with their work and look forward to using the drawing technique more on their own tomorrow and in the future.

Thank you Kelly Kits!

So important and valuable to experiment/explore various artistic media. One should not foster a fear of creativity as if it is only meant for those who can draw or paint the best. And then, to share your work with family and friends with pride and without fear, now that is ideal!
