Home schooling is exploding in population and popularity and here is why!

This is NOT to say that homeschooling is the best option for every child or family. This is NOT to say that homeschoolers are better parents. This is NOT to say that there are not great schools out there. However homeschoolers tend to get the short end of the stick when it comes to public opinion and my goal in posting this is to help others see that homeschooling for many is a valid option and can be a wonderful way for children to thrive.

I am shocked when in this day and age some people still ask me if homeschooling is legal. Then of course is the normal questions about socialization thanks to some super sheltered homeschoolers. Not every family is like that, most aren’t! In 8 years of homeschooling most of the homeschoolers we know are super social and busy and hardly home at all. I have been trying hard over the years to not over scheduled the kids and to help them focus on who they are and not who their friends want them to be. Finding a balance of friend and family time has been important. The kids have friends and as they get older make more and more social choices for themselves. I have to laugh that while I am a geek Mommy very into science my oldest daughter who is soon 14 is a social fashion butterfly that chooses to go to church every chance she can even though her own family doesn’t go. We try to support her while also trying to help her to think logically. What a challenge it is to balance things I admit but I wouldn’t change it even if I could as we are raising children to think for themselves, even when it means questioning us and learning things on their own such as religion!

Which test scores are they comparing on this chart? I was homeschooled for a short time, and I have to say that the person who “homeschooled” me heavily curved my grade to make it seem that I was doing exceptionally well. I feel that parents can report whatever grades they want, but unless those kids are taking tests in an honest, monitored environment, those numbers don’t mean much.

That assumption is rather dismal and I am sorry you had someone in your life not honestly reporting your grades correctly. However grades are not what one tends to see on studies but rather standardized test scores given and scored by companies, not parents. I am sure you can follow the sources given on that image to figure out just where they got their numbers from.

My son has dyslexia, and it is a struggle every year with new teachers and routines, he has expressed to me about homeschooling, but I am afraid I will not be able to help him as much as a teacher could! He is so very smart and just struggles with the fact that he cannot read well! He starts middle school next year, and we all know how middle school is! We are very close and he tells me everything. But I will admit I am a little scared for him too!

I think you summed up the situation well. He smart and wants to homeschooled, and your a caring mother. I absolutely think you could homeschool. There are so many different ways to do it. My daughter is going to a cyber school this year, trained teachers online in a virtual classroom with other students. It is all online and safe. If you don’t feel confident enough to teach, he could still be homeschooled and have trained teachers online!
