All over the news today and social media we heard about a new little prince being born. Kate Middleton and her husband Prince William got to hold their new born baby son that weighs in at over 8lbs. The announcement was placed outside of Buckingham Palace on the golden easel as other births have been announced soon after the safe delivery. It has been reported that she was in natural labor at the palace and then had a natural birth at the hospital. I can’t help but cheer for her as so many have been pushed or elected for early births that too often lead to unnecessary complications because of interventions. This though is not the point of my post so you will have to excuse this Crunchy Mommy as the details of the birth I do find wonderful. But then I would find it wonderful for any mother and baby, not just a royal ones.
I sit thousands and miles away from the royal baby, a different country even, and their lives have little connection to my own. Why do I care? Why does anyone not directly connected to the royal family care so much? Clearly many do. Some people have been asking this question all day and seem very annoyed that life seems to stand still as everyone rejoices in a new baby. I mean many babies are born each day and we don’t see all these millions talking about any one of those babies right? Why are the royals so special?
I think it links back to childhood and our inner drive to seek the best. We want the fairy tale and we are dreamers. I think we also want reasons to celebrate and be happy. Happiness isn’t always personal and it isn’t always about personal gain. The royal mother could be any mother and the royal baby could be any baby. We just like the idea of special. Granted some people personally like the royal story and feel connected to it as they have followed the family all their lives it seems. For some the royal family is a beacon of sorts.
For me here in America I am just happy for them and for everyone celebrating a healthy family, a natural birth, and wishing them well.
