Dogs need to stay cool too!

Many areas are hitting record high heat for extended periods and we all need ways to keep cool. It isn’t just us though as humans but our pets too that need help dealing with the hot summer days. This goes beyond knowing to not leave your dog in a car at all or outside without water. If you don’t want to spend the day out there then chances are your dog doesn’t either, bring them in! I know bringing them in is not always an option though and while clear fresh cool water is a must maybe adding a treat would be wonderful too!

  Recipe

Ingredients (* optional)
3 Cups of lowfat, plain yogurt
1 Cup of peanut butter (no salt added)
1 Tablespoon of honey
*1 Small jar of banana baby food*
* I added some blueberries and chopped mangos*

Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Whisk well. Pour mixture into an ice tray and freeze for at least three hours. Let your doggy enjoy!!!

Are your dogs inside or out?

We have two small dogs that spend most of their time inside comfy. I grew up with outside dogs though and that just the normal way of things in that area. I sometimes find myself surprised by people keeping animals outside at all times of the year but then I remember that my parents and many others did as well. Have things changed? Or maybe it was that area and because I have lived in so many other places that is now seems odd to me that someone would keep a dog outside all the time. I remember my step mother stuffing the dog house with hay in the winter and digging out the dog pen of snow. I also remember her bringing out cold water on hot days and hosing the dogs off to keep them cool. They didn’t really ever come in except for maybe the basement when a hurricane was coming. I know the dogs where much loved and well cared for, but it was different. These days my Step mother has a very old minpin that has always been an inside dog. Long gone are the days of my Dad trying to get the perfect hunting dog I guess. Maybe hunting dogs do best outside? What ever the case is, I hope you do what you can to keep your pets cool this summer!
