Do you have an Elf on a Shelf?

What is an Elf on a Shelf?

Elf on a Shelf is a tradition sweeping my country, I am not sure how far it has reached but goodness it seems as popular this year as posting photos of Christmas Trees, or rather Yule trees as they started out so long ago before the idea of Christ came along.

In short, for about $35.00 one can get a rather creepy looking elf and book that goes with him or her explaining that during the day the elf watches us and at night they report on us while we are sleeping to the north pole, telling Santa if we are naughty or nice. Then in the morning the little Elf is found someplace different around the house.

You can get either a boy or girl elf, with different hair, eye, and skin color. Be warned, they all still look creepy!

Why have an Elf on a Shelf?

Because some how the tradition is adorable and fun. It is light and joyful for children and parents seem to have a great time being creative and taking photos. It is something children will not soon forget!

In our home we have had a holiday gnome that comes, he would take away things not needed or cared for and sometimes leave new things for the kids to play with. Everyone loved the gnome. This tradition is a bit like that one. I am not sure though how well I will do trying to make them both happen this year though.

Do you have a tradition like this at all?

Will the elf murder me in my sleep?

This is another common question believe it or not. Did I mention this plastic head elf is creepy? I don’t think kids see it the way adults do else I think this boxed set would not be selling out in so many places! This little elf as something dark for adults is now some kind of tradition as well it seems, and photos attesting to this can be googled. I don’t want to scare anyone here with them. Just be aware that if the thing makes you shiver and worry, you’re not alone!

I look forward to all the great ideas and photos people share on Pinterest and Facebook about Elf on a Shelf and will hopefully add some of my own soon too! Sleep with one eye open though ok! LOL
