As a crunchy parent I find many topics I have passion about and I know there are a lot of other crunchy parents that are the same way. We parent a bit differently than most people and sometimes this gets us in legal trouble. I can’t say I have had much experience with the legal system but I read something this week that had my blood first run cold with fear, and then hot with anger!

To summarize, parents having a get together let their 6 and 7 year old daughters go out and play in the yard. They had instructions to stay in the yard. Being brave and adventurous girls they choose to do something else. They walked an area they had walked before with parents. They where a few minutes from home in a parking lot when a stranger stopped them and called the police. The police brought them home and promptly arrested one parent for each child and now the parents are facing child neglect charges.

Questions come up…. why did the stranger not just call the girls parents? Why did the police not call them? Why didn’t the police help the parents by warning the girls of dangers and leave it up to the parents to make sure it doesn’t happen again? Why did the police have to make the innocent mistake of children into a legal battle that could cost the parents so very much?

Did you know letting the girls play in the yard in their area at their age isn’t even against the law there? The police though told the parents it was. You can read more about what happened with this legal mess here.

Have you ever had a run in with the law?

Do you know who you would call if you do?

We should be prepared! One never knows what will happen!

With that in mind….

The only ‘run in’ with the law I’ve ever had is fighting this custody battle for my son.

    • Kimberly Storms

I am sorry you had to go through that!

  2. Kelly D

I got a warning for going over the speed limit when I was a teenager.

    • Kimberly Storms

I think that happens to most of us! I have not had one ticket though as an adult!

  3. Heather Johnson

I personally have not had much experience with the law. Recently, however, my husband had to go to court to get his name legally changed to my last name.

    • Kimberly Storms

That is actually very cool in my opinion! Sometimes I think my whole family should get our names changed! I wonder how hard that would be?

  4. Joana Bento

The only experience I had was when my car was stolen. They found the car but never the people who did it

    • Kimberly Storms

Oh no! I am sorry to hear it!

  5. Becca Wilson

Only thing that has really happened to me is speeding tickets. Not fun at all!

  6. Bridget Heiple Reich

I’ve gotten a speeding ticket in a school zone. I am very careful now!

  7. Amanda Sakovitz

Luckily i haven’t had much experience with the law. I wanted to be a lawyer though when i was in elementary school.

  8. KV

A car was pulled over in the neighborhood & police surrounded it.

  9. Uplifting Families

I had to deal with a hit and run in December. I was on my way to my daughter’s Christmas concert and I was pulling into a parking space at the corner store. Then next thing I hear was a crunching noise. I got out of my car and apparently the lady next to me opened her door into mine. I called the cops and they were being slow. The other couple decided they didn’t want to wait any longer and fled the scene. I did get their license plate and filed a claim on insurance. Luckily, it was their fault. But so far the insurance haven’t gotten anything from them. Doubt they will because the couple didn’t have insurance on their car.

    • Kimberly Storms

Wow how stressful! Doesn’t that other couple get in legal trouble for not having insurance?

  10. Thomas Murphy

The only run in with the law I have had is speeding tickets.

  11. Ashley Tucker

I guess you could saw I have a lot of experience with the law as I work in law enforcement.

    • Kimberly Storms

      Thank you for your service!

  12. Tammy S

The only experience I have had with the law is to get a speeding ticket. I totally deserved it.

  13. Elizabeth Hayden

The first week after I moved into a new house I got a ticket because my car was parked the wrong direction. I had no clue that you had to park a certain direction before that.

  14. iamalighthouse

I haven’t had any personal interaction with the law, but I do love following politics. 🙂

  15. Tara

I had someone hit my car once. Luckily I’ve never been pulled over!

  16. ElizabethB

Only experience I’ve had with the law is having to call the police when some pranksters through a rock at one of my windows, breaking it. I never found out who did it, though.

    • Kimberly Storms

Sorry to hear it! Was it only the one event? I hope so!

  17. Laur ari

I get called for jury duty every three years.

    • Kimberly Storms

Um… that is special! I can’t say I envy you!

  18. Antonio Ruiz

My 1st and last dui was a ugly experience and I will never do it again!!

    • Kimberly Storms

Sorry to hear about that. I am glad your so resolved to make sure it never happens again!

  19. Susan Christy

I’ve never had any kind of run-in with the law, not even a traffic ticket, which is pretty amazing since I’m old! Driving for 40 years.

  20. mysweetiepiepie

Just a couple of speeding tickets.

  21. Heather Pfingsten

I was stopped for speeding late at night when I was a teenager. Instead of just giving me the ticket the cop pulled me into the front of his car and questioned me for 45 minutes asking me stupid questions. I later found out this was not proper police procedure but at the time I was too scared to question anything. That is just about my only encounter with cops but I know a few people that have endured more significant events.

    • Kimberly Storms

That is scary! Abuse of power is a real concern these days!

  22. Sandra Roberts

I’ve never had a run in per say with the police. I have called them in the past for trespassers in my yard, but that’s about it.

  23. Kathy Luman

I got a speeding ticket win a cop was right at the boarder line where the speed changed. I didn’t see the sign saying the speed was changing and I got a $200 ticket. I was not a happy camper.

  24. Margaret Smith

The only run in that I’ve had was when I was younger, a girl that I knew poured paint and keyed a brand new car that I had. I had to bring her to court to get reimbursed for all the damage that she did to the car.

  25. Denise S

I was a reckless driver as a teen and got a lot of tickets.

  26. McKim

I’ve not had any “run ins” with the law, other than a couple minor tickets – which I deserved – when I was much younger.

  27. Tabathia B

I had a lot of speeding tickets in my hey day, so many the insurance company deemed me high risk and dropped me from my parents coverage and put me on my own policy because of the number of tickets and I also used to get stopped for not renewing my tags or license on time.

  28. Cynthia C

    I’ve had minor traffic offenses.

  29. Nicole Vosburgh

When someone wasn’t paying attention that traffic was stopped on a busy highway due to construction and hit us from behind going 40mph totaling the car. Boy, was that a hassle to work through.

  30. Amy Pratt

I had a motorcycle office stop me because I missed seeing someone in the crossing lane. He gave me a stern lecture and told me to never do it again.

  31. Crystal F

I had a couple of accidents when I was a teenager. The police were great with everything. thank you!

  32. Kim Kihega

The only trouble I have had with the law has involved neighbors and/or my kids. At my old house, I had to call about a neighbor pulling a gun on my husband and kids!

    • Kimberly Storms

No one needs neighbors like that! wow

  33. nickie

I had my identity stolen and I had to go to court for that.

    • Kimberly Storms

That is rather scary. Did you learn anything important from it?

  34. Osama

well spending tickets not too much fun really.

  35. Barbara Montag

The only experience I can think of is calling 911 when there was an assault in our parking lot.
    thank you

  36. Geoff K

Luckily I’ve not had much interaction with the law other than a minor car accident I was in a few years ago for which the offending driver refused to provide insurance info.

  37. I once got a ticket for being in a park after it got dark. It was a public place on top of a mountain, the perfect place to watch a sunset. Once we descended, there were cops sitting there, writing tickets to the 100 or so people who had gone up top. I cried my way out of the ticket.

    • Kimberly Storms

I have to admit something very naughty…. I love state forests and places with water at night! They are just so peaceful and the wild life comes out around dark! Thankfully I only ever got a warning once when I was a teen for swimming in a state park lake after dark!

  38. Denise L

One night when I was 21-ish my fiance and I and his sister and her fiance had dinner at their aunt’s house. We stayed a long time, having great conversation. When we finally drove home to our quiet little neighborhood (in our VOLVO STATION WAGON), a police car followed us to our garage, shined their brights on us and started questioning. We were not doing anything wrong, just pulling into our own garage, but I didn’t appreciate their attitude. Nothing came of it, but the exchange has always bothered me.

    • Kimberly Storms

That would have bothered me as well. Maybe they had a call about a break in around the area or?

  39. Lesley M

When I was in high school, my parents house was broken into. We think that a phone call scared them away before too much was taken. Unfortunately, we never did find out who did it.

  40. Veronica R

I personally haven’t had many run ins with the law. I did get a speeding ticket once and had 1 accident, but those were years ago. Keeping fingers crossed that I will not have any more!

  41. Monique Rizzo

I got pulled over for going 23 in a 20 school zone!

    • Kimberly Storms

-blink blink blink- What ever happened to the spirit of the law?

  42. RICHARD HICKS

Many years ago, I got a speeding ticket.

  43. Tamar

I was part of a class action suit a few years ago and got a check in the mail.

  44. Dana

I once got pulled over for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, but he let me go with a warning.

  45. Jessica P

I’ve just had to deal with them for damage to my car in the past, but everything else went through “college” police, etc. 🙂 jessicapeeling@yahoo.com

  46. Brandy Fisk

I got a ticket when I was teenager for switching too many lanes even though it was like 2 am and no one on the street accept apparently the lady cop. She was very serious and did not cut me a break at all.

    • Kimberly Storms

I had no idea one could even get a ticket for changing lanes too often….

  47. Ally

I guess my only experience with the law was asking a police officer for directions when I was lost!

  48. Pam H.

I was pulled over for the tint on my car’s windows being too dark.

  49. Brandy Williams

Experience I have had with the law was in Oct.My little brother who was 20 young and stupid ran from a police officer the officer ran him off the road resulting in his death.. we have been trying to get more on theincident since then and have been consulting lawyers.

    • Kimberly Storms

That is beyond tragic! I am so sorry to hear it. I hope you get some closure.

  50. Austin Baroudi

I’m currently in a custody battle for my daughter.

  51. sharon

i have received parking and speeding tickets

  52. Senny

Speeding…i have been pulled over…ummmm…a few times for speeding

  53. Michelle J.

Honestly, I’ve never even gotten a ticket!

  54. Della Barker

I’ve never had a run in per say with the police and I certainly hope it continues that way

  55. Starla B

I have gotten 1 ticket due to speeding. It was when I was 19 years YOUNG and super silly.. and obviously fast! 😉 I thought I would be able to talk my way out of it but this officer was not having it!

  56. Daiva

The only time I’ve dealt with a lawyer was when we bought our house, he did the paperwork for the closing but I think it is quite different..

This story is so scary! I wish people and police would just help it to be a lesson for the parents and kids rather than arresting a parent and causing so much trouble and stress for the family 🙁

  57. Tasha Wilkerson

Talking on my cell phone while driving 🙁

  58. laura

I ran a red light (or so the cop says). It was a yellow light that turned red AFTER I started to turn..still pissed off about that lol.

  59. Kirby

I’ve never really had an experience with the law unless you count going over to my Dad’s high school friends home who happens to be on a SWAT team.

  60. Jacqueline

I had a crazy neighbor living downstairs from me when I was in college. The electrical breaker box was in her apartment and she would turn off my vacuum if she was annoyed by the noise. She called the police about the sound of my dishwasher upsetting her dog lol.

  61. When I was real young, I was pulled over because I had put my license tag on the front of the car instead of the back. The officer just told me to make sure and put it on correctly when I got home. Gosh,I was so embarrassed.

  62. jenn giannetto

as a teenager in a small town i used to get pulled over and searched frequently even though they never found anything on me the searches persisted. i worked in my teens and got off work pretty late so they would often pull me over on my way home.

  63. Sherri

I have gotten pulled over for speeding several times and got warnings each time. And the time I hydroplaned into a bridge and totalled my car the deputy wrote me up for being on the wrong side of the road so I had to go to court to get that thrown out. Wouldn’t have been on the wrong side of the road if I hadn’t hit the bridge….

  64. I have to go to court occasionally for work, but it’s happy usually – I do adoptions 🙂

  65. Mendy Dinsmore

The only experience I have had was being pulled over for speeding. No ticket, just a warning.

  66. laurie steiner

I’ve only gotten one ticket in my 57 years, and I was surprised, as I was only going a few miles over the limit…

  67. Birdiebee

The only time I needed a lawyer was for a divorce and when my husband died.

  68. I haven’t had run-ins with the law, but if I do in the future I’d definitely want a lawyer. You’ve got to be prepared for any situation these days.

  69. Naila Moon

Expired license plates (was my Mom’s car), speeding ticket ( I was coasting in neutral down a hill),expired license.
I will just say stupid teen stuff, small town and knowing a few police officers including the local sheriff helped. 😉

  70. Jessica W

I haven’t had any serious encounters with the law (thankfully!). Your typical speeding tickets and a couple of times I had someone hit my parked car and run!

  71. Robin

I once got a ticket for an illegal right hand turn.

  72. Jennifer H.

Luckily my only experience with the law has been jury duty and speeding tickets!

  73. Kristy Graboski

I work for a doctor and I clean his home. One weekend his ex girlfriend came and stole a bunch of stuff. I had to go make a witness report with the police. Not fun!

  74. amy stonger

I have had various tickets when I was younger. Recently, i worked closely with detectives when my sister was missing. Her body was eventually found 7 weeks after she disappeared. It was presumed to be a suicide.

    • Kimberly Storms

I am so very sorry to hear about your loss!

  75. amanda smith

    Speeding ticket? I don’t think that’s a run in 🙂

  76. wen budro

Thank goodness I’ve never had to go through a legal mess. I’ve had to call the police on my ex-neighbors….it was stressful.

  77. Erin

I haven’t had any run-ins with the law and I’d probably call my mom or dad if I did! And hopefully they could help me, haha….

  78. Danalee Davis

The only experiences I have had with the law are positive, because I haven’t done anything illegal. I would like to keep it that way. 🙂

  79. tina reynolds

I have never had an experience with them hope to keep it that way

  80. Carly D.

I’ve never really had a run it with the law myself. But I had jury duty and experience how the law works first hand.

  81. Brittney House

The only trouble I’ve gotten into with the law was traffic related. I only had to pay the tickets.

  82. Kristina

I went on a police ride-along once. I also had to do some journalism research at the court house. I felt like I lived there for a few weeks.

  83. Elizabeth

I’ve never had a run in with the law, not even a speeding ticket (knock on wood!). I do remember when I was a really little girl, my dad got pulled over and ticketed for speeding and I was so scared I started crying my eyes out. I didn’t really understand at the time that a speeding ticket doesn’t equal jail time, lol!

  84. Wendy pesce

We once sold a car and somehow left our insurance card in it. Shortly after, the person who bought It got in a car accident and the other party sued us thinking since it was our insurance card we were responsible! Thankfully after we produced the paperwork from the sale we were released from any liability

  85. Jessica Sage

My only real experience is sitting in on court cases occasionally since my grandpa is a retired judge.

  86. Sarah

I work at an urgent care clinic, and it has happened where there is some violent patient (usually with regards to a mental disorder). We have been assisted by very kind police officers who ensure these people go to a clinic that is more suited for their needs, or they help the patient to calm down so we can care for them.

  87. Mary P

I failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign.

  88. NSmith

    Speeding ticket…but got thrown out!

  89. janna johnson

I am filing bankruptcy and it has been positive so far.

  90. christine jessamine

I have not had much experience. But it would be useful to learn basics in case something comes up in the future

  91. andrea v

My german shepherd has caused a few run ins with the law. He is very friendly and likes to escape and meet new friends. He once got in trouble for breaking and entering our neighbors house through a screen door to let their dog out to play. I ended up with a ticket for non licensing but luckily no charges were pressed.

  92. Joanna Allison

My brother is a lawyer. The only experience I have had is going to the court for a traffic ticket my son got. He just got his fine reduced and everything was okay.

  93. Melissa Bowers

I haven’t really had any problems with the law, other than one time recently when I got pulled over for not staying in my lane after a turn for a full 100 feet before moving into the next lane over. 1) How am I supposed to know how long 100 feet is while driving? I’m really bad at estimating distances even when standing still. 2) I know I was in my lane for at least five seconds before moving over, and the street was deserted (except, apparently, for the policeman who pulled me over). He said he had been instructed to pull people over for “anything and everything” that evening. He didn’t give me a ticket, so I guess all’s well that ends well.

  94. sara giresi

My parents taped lead to my foot when i was a kid (not really) and it stuck… I had speeding fun when i was a kid!

  95. Stephanie S.

I haven’t gotten into any legal trouble thankfully, but I had a lawyer to help set up a visitation schedule for my son’s father to see him. She is a wonderful lawyer and everything went surprisingly well!

  96. Becky VanGinkel

Hmmm… i’ve never really had a ‘bad’ experience with the law thankfully but a couple of years ago our sons pedal bike got stolen off of our porch and we called the police to report it.. they came and took a statement and then 4 days later my husband found a few neighborhood kids riding our sons bike, stopped and yelled at the kids and put our sons bike in the back of his bucket truck and brought it home! lol They had beaten it up and scuffed it so we ended up buying him a new one but it all ended well 🙂

    babydjs_mom@yahoo.com

  97. Missy

I got pulled over from making a left turn. Had to go to traffic school.

  98. diane nnaemeka

My dad bought a car for me off of craigslist, didn’t realise that the guy didn’t give my dad proof of purchase. The car couldn’t be registered at the MVA, so it was technically illegal. We sent the car overseas. Pretty weird experience!

  99. diane nnaemeka

Had trouble with buying a car that resulted in my dad technically being the owner of a car that wasn’t able to be registered, thus making it illegal.

  100. susan quackenbush

My run in with the law involved forgetting my setbelt.

  101. jeccica simpson

Just traffic violations, thank god. I had to fight some of them. Went to traffic school for the rest.

  102. Tonya Tipton

The only problem I ever had with the law was a car accident I was involved in but luckily no one was seriously hurt but I still got in trouble.

  103. Corey Olomon

I’ve only a couple of tickets through the years. Other than that I’ve only had a divorce and once served on a jury.

  104. Kathlyne

Luckily I have only gotten one ticket for speeding!

  105. Connie Tillman

I was 9 months pregnant with my 2nd child – I got into the left turn only lane 100 feet ahead of time — I got hit with a $100 ticket 🙁

  106. Wes Hovorka

I have had a few speeding tickets then an MIP when I was 18.

  107. Amber G

Nothing major I just have a slight lead foot, so I have gotten pulled over for speeding.

  108. Mariah B

Unfortunately, when my parents got divorced I had to talk to the Judge. That’s really my only experience with the law though.

  109. Only experience I have had with the law was during an auto accident. Great thing is that the police officer saw the whole thing and the guy that hit me couldn’t deny it.

  110. Holly Mitkowski

When I got a speeding ticket.

  111. Kristie D.

When I was 17 (almost eighteen) I got stopped for being out after curfew. I was just down the street at the beach but a member of the beach club called the police. They drove us home (up the street) and made me wake up my mom. She was sleeping and could care less. They towed my boyfriend’s car because the tags were expired. Oops! kristiedonelson(at)gmail(dot)com Thank you.

  112. LynneMarie

My only experience with the law has been the 4 times I’ve been called for Jury Duty.

  113. Alina Hahn

I get pulled over a lot for speeding. Once I had an old insurance card while on vacation (a road trip) and the cop ordered me to appear in court to prove I had insurance. I found a lawyer in the area who was nice enough to appear in court for me so I didn’t have to drive all the way there just to prove I had insurance.

  114. Megan

I accidentally cut off a cop when trying to follow my husband’s car. I was a crying mess so he let me off with a warning.

  115. Helga

I have had to call the animal control on an neighbor who was neglecting their dog recently. They did NOTHING.

    • Kimberly Storms

So sorry to hear it 🙁

  116. The only run in I had was when a cop pulled us over and ticketed us on false charges – he didn’t tell us what the charges were and plunked on us a false ticket. We’ll be fighting it soon.

    • Kimberly Storms

Abuse of authority is a real issue sadly 🙁

  117. joni

I once had a rape victim chase my car down the road. I let her sit in my car til the cops arrived. That’s the only time I had a brush with the cops but it was really scary because I did not know where the rapist was at the time.

    • Kimberly Storms

That is frightening and so sad. I am glad you helped!

  118. chelsie fletcher

I’m a good girl however my ex was not so lets just say I’m glad that life is behind me 😉

  119. June Lisle

That story really makes me angry. A recent experience with the law for me was having to give a statement of what I saw when a truck rammed a parked truck at the store and then took off.

  120. Lacey J

I have been through court for divorce and for a (step parent) adoption of my son 🙂 glad to stick on the right side of the law!

  121. Lisa V.

I’ve only been pulled over one time (about 25 years ago) for speeding.

  122. Taylor Closet

I had a flat and the policeman stopped to help.

  123. Kate B

The only run ins I have had have been deserved speeding tickets. Not since I was a teenager though.

  124. Naomie

I remember being in from of my parents house with a friend when I was 16, and a police officer stopped to ask us what we were doing. He did not believe I lived there, and had me go inside to get my parents.

  125. Rebecca Pace

I’ve never been in trouble with the law but I could really use this $50!

    Thx

  126. Dawn S.

My only encounter with the law was getting pulled over for a headlight that my husband had incorrectly changed. It had flickered off when the officer saw me, but by the time he had walked up to get my license, it was functioning again. We were both confused and he made me promise to have it looked at.

  127. Kim Ripley

I am a photographer and I got caught trespassing in an abandoned rural house that I was photographing.

    • Kimberly Storms

Did you get arrested? We have beautiful old abandoned buildings/farms around here I would love to photograph but fear getting into trouble!

  128. I go out for coffee with our local police officers here in Mt. Juliet. We meet up at Chick-fil-a some mornings. Never had a run in with the law.

  129. Michelle B

Had to call them once, when my Autistic son escaped from our home.

  130. SuzySweeps

When I was in my early 20’s, right after the Los Angeles riots, I got pulled over and frisked and car towed, and wrongly arrested (was wearing a blue plaid shirt – later when I went to court, all files “disappeared” – strangely. The only thing I got a “fix it ticket” for was my license plates were expired by barely a month. Was waiting for a check to come in.

  131. Laura P.

The home I grew up in was broken into and in high school I witnessed a student steal from a teacher’s purse. I wasn’t really sure what he was doing at first until the police came to question me because they had to question everybody in the classroom at the time. It was a study hall and she had briefly left the room to talk to another teacher and he came in. I thought he may have been told to get something but that wasn’t the case.

  132. Claire

I’ve never personally had a run-in with the law, thank goodness.

  133. Robyn S

My only interaction with the law was during my divorce years ago. I got mouthy with his attorney and the judge wasn’t happy. 🙁

  134. Deborah Gardner

I dealt with the law when my truck got stolen. But I was the victim, inn the eyes of the law. Thanks.

  135. Linda Kwolek

I also have gotten my speeding tickets when I was young and dumb. Being older and hopefully wiser, I realize I do not want to give my money away.

  136. Lori Walker

We got threatened with a law suit. But it’s okay we won!

  137. Kristen V

I got a speeding ticket on a long road trip.

  138. Mihaela Day

I never had a run in with the law

  139. Angie Ukena

I got a speeding ticket driving down a hill, that really bugged me

  140. Kara Griggs

My husband was was surrounded by cops walking home from work one day. Someone thought he looked like a guy that robbed the bank a couple days before.

  141. Rebecca

I haven’t had any run ins with the law, but I was in the car when my husband got pulled over for speeding.

  142. alena svetelska

I never had any experience with a law,but have very painfull memories when my parents got divorce when i was little

  143. Vanessa W.

I got pulled over once when I was 19 and one my way home from a road trip. I was so scared, LOL! No tickets since though (15 years!), so I’m ok with that!

  144. vera

My only run ins with the law are speeding tickets from a few years ago.

  145. Alene Nielsen

Getting pulled over for going to fast.

  146. Jodie Rosenblum

I’ve never really had any experiences.

  147. Sarah L

I’ve been selected to serve on a jury, but they didn’t pick me.
    Thanks for the contest.

  148. I’ve only been pulled over when I was about 20 because my registration was up & I had yet to pay it. Just got a warning 🙂

  149. Liz Sherman

My honey had one light out on the car and the cop stopped us lol.. I had no belt and I got a warning ..that scared me too death never happened again lol..

  150. Megan Sweet

I’ve never had a run in with the law.

  151. Liz N

One time, we were driving around a construction site just to look at the new building and got stopped by a copy for trespassing. Luckily, no ticket. Whew.

  152. Ceinwyn R

I had a run in yesterday! I was verbally assaulted by a schizophrenic man (police told me later) at the park who threatened to chop me up. The police told me their hands were tied and he walked away and now he’s roaming freely in our small town. We have a massive problem with victim blaming and attacking the wrong people in our culture.

    • Kimberly Storms

We clearly need better healthy care in our country, specially mental health care. That man should have at least been taken in for a 48 hour hold! Scary! I am glad he did not hurt you!

  153. jeremy mclaughlin

    Just for a speeding ticket.

  154. Stephanie Galbraith

    I got a speeding ticket.

  155. Debra Hall

no run ins but i try never to call them…they don’t listen to anything you say so why bother

  156. Anna B

I got a ticket for chalk drawings during the height of the Occupy movement. It was later thrown out of court as a waste of the judge’s time.

  157. Anna B

I got a ticket for chalk drawings at the height of the Occupy movement. The judge threw it out as a waste of his time.

    • Kimberly Storms

I remember that! Talk about abuse of power! I am just you did not get hurt!

  158. joe gersch

i got pulled over for going the wrong way on a one way street

  159. Les Johnson

I work as a paralegal so I am involved with legal matters every day. But personally, I have never gotten in trouble, other than a speeding ticket years ago.

  160. MISSY MARIE

Thankfully the only run in’s I’ve had with the law were a few speeding tickets. When I was much younger I liked to drive fast.

  161. Daniel M

got a ticket for an expired sticker ages ago

  162. Tiffany Courtright

    I got a D.U.I. back in 2008

  163. judy mitchell

i’ve had several interactions with the law a few for me speeding when i was younger but the most recent was because while I was driving my daughter to school in the morning I saw a van hit a teenager and drive away without even stopping to see if he was ok. Unfortunately, we (my daughter nor I were able to give complete license plate number but we did provide a description ) and made sure the boy was okay and getting medical attention.

  164. Heidi Daily

Thankfully, I have not had any run ins with the law, but my roommate from college recently became a lawyer.

  165. Jill Myrick

Other than getting pulled over for speeding once I have never had any experience with the law.

    jweezie43[at]gmail[dot]com

  166. Tammie Venne

I got arrested once for bouncing a $50 check, I never knew you could get arrested for that but I refuse to even use checks after that

  167. DeAnna Keller

Just a couple of speeding tickets.

  168. leslie roberts

I’ve been pulled over 2x for speeding, and 1x for no seatbelt,

  169. Allison S.

My dad was a police officer so I never had trouble with the law.

  170. Lorie Sanders

Well when i was 19 years old I was on my lunch break picking up dinner at Churches Chicken. It was 5 minutes from my job at when i worked the 4-11pm shift. A police car came up behind me in a residential area while I was going back to work. He followed me for 3 minutes while i was working through the residential streets and right before I made it to the main road he hit his lights I pulled over and waited. Four other cop cars pulled up guns were drawn and they asked me to exit the car. They searched and searched and told me i fit the profile of a car thief in the area. I’m 5″2 99lbs soaking wet back then and they believed i stole a car because it was a 2001 VW Jetta brand new and i was in a shitty neighborhood and that i was trying to flee from them driving 35 mph. I always have a very skeptic eye when it come to the police. After having multiple guns drawn on me for no reason i had to return to work and service unhappy AOL customers.

  171. Karen Drake

I have never really had any experience with the law other than being pulled over a few times for things like having a tail light out, I have never been given a ticket.

  172. Cheryl B.

The only experience I have had with the law is jury duty…

  173. Diana Hatch

Luckily I’ve never really had any dealings with the law!

  174. tallulahjane

I had a speeding ticket and the officer was nice but I was so upset that I cried afterwards…slowed me down.

  175. I have actually never had an experience with the law. I don’t even think I have ever interacted with a police officer.

  176. Myranda

The only law run in I’ve had was dealing with an apartment who lied to us and tried to make us pay them a few thousand dollars. Guess who didn’t end up paying because I had email proof of what they said? It was just obnoxious and ruined my poor husbands’ credit.

  177. Cherie Montorio

I was pulled over for speeding 3 times. No other run ins.

  178. Katie Tanner

I am a new reader, and a fan!!
My next door neighbors had a break-in and we have video cameras so the police came over and took all our video footage for their investigation

  179. KHBride

In high school I stopped at a yellow light when I saw a cop, to avoid flying through a red. I got rear-ended and the gentlemen stepped out of his truck and asked me why I stopped at the “yella” The officer pulled over, having seen the accident and greeted me by name. He was the officer that worked at our high school and apparently knew me. The guy who hit me realized he was screwed. He got a ticket and the officer consoled me.

  180. Sofia

Run in? Well, I was pulled over for driving on the wrong side (huge oops since the sun glare blocked my view and thought I turned into a different road…which turned out to be a one way.) Did I mention I turned right in front of the cop? Yeah…

    • Kimberly Storms

It just seems stupid to me to ticket you for it. It is not like you meant to do and not as if anyone got hurt! Just yesterday we saw someone make that very same mistake right in front of us. We slowed and let them back up and correct course. No big deal.

  181. Danielle D

family stuff not really about me but the rest of my family thankfully thats all done and gone now.

  182. CHRISTINA DUTRA

when i was in high school, i was late to school, and trying to get there as fast as possible. i was like 5 minutes away, and the cops picked me up, put me in the car, and gave me a ticket for being late. i had to do community service.

  183. I really haven’t had many experiences with the law. I did get a speeding ticket once, though!

  184. rachael

i was almost an accessory to three people who stole credit cards and cars.. because i told them everything that happened, i wasn’t charged.

  185. SuzySweeps

I just had a problem with Facebook. They sent me a message saying they deleted ALL my likes because I have liked too many sites. No warning. So, I am not sure what to do about all of these entries I have submitted through giveaways, because not only did they delete every one of my liked pages but banned me from liking pages for 30 days. Any suggestions?

    • Kimberly Storms

Wow, I have never heard of that happened to anyone before. Did you appeal it? Sadly so much with facebook it automated and you might have to wait a month before entering giveaways with facebook likes!

  186. maya hu

my fiance got robbed at gunpoint once, but the guy who did it got a slap on the wrist for turning his friends in so that sucked. thats the only run in with the law i have experienced.

  187. kathy f

I have had only a few interactions with the law, a speeding ticket and my car was stolen. Both times were pleasant for awkward situations.

  188. Mel

I’ve tried to fight speeding tickets in court before…the only time I won was when the officer didn’t show up. 🙂

  189. Jennifer Madigan

Just tickets and haven’t had one since college

  190. Deb Anderson

Had a break-in and lots of things stolen, no insurance. Police came but did NOTHING. Culprit left fingerprints and even a note to me. I guess they have more important cases than a simple robbery, but I felt as if calling the police about it was just a waste of time.

  191. I have not had any run ins with the law. I have no idea who I would call if that happened. This story was quite an eye opener of things that can happen.

  192. Annmarie W.

I have fortunately never had any kind of run=in with the law (except getting a speeding ticket once, and that was done in a standard, routine way.). Oh, and I was stopped one time for not having my new registration sticker on my license plate…but the policeman understood when I told him my hubby hadn’t put it on yet, but I had it with me in the glove compartment. He just gave me a warning & told me to put it on when I got home.

  193. Brynn

I had to go to court to fight a very unfair traffic ticket. I won but it was quite a bit of trouble and time haha

  194. Nicole Millheim

Can I plead the fifth..lol…For real though I had an awful Landlord..he was crazy..thank god i bought a house and dont have to rent anymore..This landlord came over screaming at me one day because the blinds broke..he tried to break in the house. I called the police and they were like what is wrong with this guy..sooooo happy I dont ever have to rent again

  195. michael schultz

really cool prize I hope to win.

  196. Larissa Brunken

Our landlord is a law enforcement officer we have ran into him numerous times in uniform and he’s stopped by. He stopped my kids one day for no helmets… only thing is he could not issue them a ticket since he’s a city police officer and we were in the county jurisdiction…but he stopped them to say hi

  197. Tina Wa

After my brother died the mortgage company he had for his house sent someone over to drill out the locks on the house “to protect everything inside”. They hadn’t filed foreclosure papers yet. All his stuff was still in the house. The cops said they had the right to do it. What the WHAT???

  198. e michelle

the law…haa haa getting pulled over for tint..hubby would rather pay a ticket than get rid of it!

  199. Mary Beth Elderton

There is 11 years difference in age between my son and daughter. One day my son and his good friend, both around 14 or 15 at the time, took my daughter, his sister, then around 3 or 4 to a park near our home, a park we had visited a hundred times. They had been gone about 30 minutes when 3 police cars, each carrying one of the kids, arrived at my house. It seems that someone called to report two suspicious characters trying to take a little girl from a slide. *sigh* I am glad they brought them home rather than to the police station.

  200. mechele johnson

I lived on the Big Island of Hawaii as a teenager, and got arrested along with my entire biology class and teacher at a protest to stop Geothermal (fracking) drilling in the rain forest! I have to admit, it was fun!

  201. Francine Anchondo

One time when I was 12 I witnessed my neighbors house being robbed so I had to talk to police then and give a description .

  202. heather sullivan

I haven’t had any run ins with laws but I do have to say custody battles are ridiculous I’m in one now

  203. Laura

When I was in college a group of my friends and I got egged by a car full of boys. My one friend was even hit in the face. We called the police and they found the boys. We then watched them getting brought into the campus police station and they had to call their parents to pick them up. Their parents were not happy, and I’m sure they got in a lot of trouble.

  204. Emily

My only run-ins have been getting pulled over for speeding.

  205. Rachel Coleman

I had a seat belt ticket once.

  206. Heidi M

I got pulled over once for light out on my license plate. 🙂 small town

  207. Jesselyn A/Jesstinger

Over my life I’ve had a fair number of memorable & meaningful encounter/ experiences ~ both positive and not so positive.

One incident that involved the police but was not lawyer-worthy: leat summer we were grilling in our back yard where we have painstakingly build a garden BBQ patio. A couple of times a neighbor in an apartment building behind our house, yelled at us out the window that the smell from the grill was upsetting his wife. We could see the window A/C units and suggested they just close their windows for the short time the grill would actually be on. Then he came over (trespassing) on the property to yell at us a threaten us saying the air was bad for his wife’s health.

To accommodate them we pretty much ruined our enjoyable evenings, relaxing in our backyard, ejoying a favorite American passtime and we gave THAT up – moved the grill and a couple of rickety folding about 50 yards away in the ugly confines of our driveway (by the garbage cans) but instead of thanking us ~ they call the police and complained about us like we were criminals. The police came over and asked if there wasn’t something we could do “to accommodate our neighbors?” !!! We explained all the ways and the sacrifices we’d already made (pointing to the very lovely patio that we were no longer enjoying … even though it was perfectly legal for us to enjoy our own backyard and and the neighors had refused to even close their windows to mitigate. And we only BBQd like twice a week!

The office still said we should try harder to be more considerate. We just stopped BBQing altogether and eventually they moved after their was a fire in their building (someone had left a candle in a window to close to the curtains…)

Another time I DID have to call a lawyer (but no police were involved when I slipped on a very slick supermarket floor while looking for an item on a top shelf (I was wearing rubber soled flats.) I hit the back of my had on the metal edge of an empty (unstocked) shelf ~ and like al head wounds it was very bloody and looked a lot worse than it was and I just wanted to go home NOT to the ER. I insisted over and over I did not want to go to the hospital, I was completely alert and walking fine on my own and as my Honey/Hubby had been layed off ~ we had no health insurance. Just give me a ride home ~ four blocks away. But NO WAY – they were clearly worried about their own liability so the ambulance came and I was soon in the ER for a couple of hours. The bill (including the ambulance) was $3,700+)

I wasn’t looking to make money or cash in on “pain & suffering” I simply wanted them to pay the ER medical bill (not even follow-up appointments and meds)The Market’s insurance guy called and I foolishly agreed to meet him at the store to explain and show him what happened. All seemed well until they caled to say they wouldn’t pay for anything becuase they had “determined they had no culpability” and that while they had no video of the incident itself ~ they did have a video tape of an employee asking me if I needed help finding something about 10 minutes earlier so that meant it was my own fault if I got distracted looking for something on a top shelf.

I was furious ~ especially because I fought tooth and nail to NOT go to the ER – I was sent there because THEY wanted to protect their butt. I didn’t even want them to pay me ~ just the hospital bill TO the hospital directly. They refused and I called a personal injury lawyer I had found through a family friend’s reference. It took two years ~ but they finally paid up and I signed all the wavers etc.

The irony is that I had been a very valuable customer (I shopped there not only for my family but also for a Soup Kitchen that we volunteer at) and surely spent well over $5000 a year in there. As a result of this unfortunatel situation, I boycotted the store for years.

Honestly, I could probably write a books about other good and bad lawyer and police situations. These were just the two least complicated and fastest to describe that came to mind. THANKS.

    • Kimberly Storms

That grilling situation sounds really aggravating. I understand not being able to pull out heavy A/C window units to close a window (maybe they were a different kind) but couldn’t they have gotten air purifiers and closed doors to those rooms. I think if one has such health concerns they have to be ready to with triggers and such. It seems crazy that they called the cops on you. You tried to make it better and it sounds like they did nothing but yell at you and call the cops! As for store issue…. wow…. sorry it took so long for them to pay up!

  208. Kimberly

I had to serve Jury Duty once…I believe they paid me $30/day!!

  209. Emily Wells

Technically it wasn’t my run-in…it was my sister’s. We shared an apartment many years ago, and used to commute to work together. She was driving us one morning and got pulled over for speeding. Took her ticket, thanked the cop, and we drove away. The very next day, the same exact cop pulled her over and gave her another speeding ticket. Speeding is technically breaking the law, but the first day, she was going 5 mph over, and the second day, 5 mph over again. I don’t really consider that speeding, lol At any rate, on the second day, she cussed at the cop, scribbled her name on the ticket, threw his clip board out her window, and we sped off. O_o I watched him in the rearview mirror and he was standing there with his mouth hanging open.

  210. BILL HOFF

Got a ticket for driving on the sidewalk…but I really just parked on a side street sidewalk with no curbs

  211. Dorothy Walters

I got a speeding ticket several years ago. Wasn’t paying attention.

  212. Michelle S

The only experience I’ve had was when someone broke into my car overnight, and they had to dust for fingerprints all over my car and take my prints to eliminate them from their findings. It was a long and messy process.

  213. Eva Biggs

Haven’t really had any run ins with the law. I did have a 2 yr old show up at my house in a diaper and sweater, it was freezing outside. We look around outside for someone looking for him. Then called the cops, my husband continued looking around. The cops came along as he walked down the road and pointed them toward our house and the man looking for the boy came along at the same time. He said thathe was asleep and the kid must reach the door knob and got out. I believe the cop probably took a report of it but that’s all.

  214. Holly Storm-Burge

My husband has been involved in a hit and run twice, where someone hit him and sped off. He got the tag number the last time and we called the police. Even though we reported it, the police said there was nothing they could do. Sad.

    • Kimberly Storms

How scary that you can report who hit you and our justice system does nothing 🙁

  215. Jennifer L G

Never had a run in with the law

  216. Brian E.

Thanks for the giveaway…no great law stories to speak of, but I did serve on a grand jury once.
