Thankful Challenge – Day 18

How often do you move in the military?

How often one moves in the military really depends on the branch and the job the service member has. For us we moved bases 9 times in 16 years and lived in over a dozen houses. This military family life has sent us all over the country it seems. I can no longer even recall all the street addresses for the places we have lived. In some ways it is a blessing! The kids have seen many parts of the country. Of course there are the hardships but this post isn’t about those.

I am thankful that I have gotten to see so much of our country.

At this rate I think it would be a great time to plan a trip to see the rest of the states! We have seen over half of them! The kids would love it. I think living in so many places and taking trips might be why the kids all life geography so much. In some ways homeschooling and military family life go really well together. Geography I think is one of those ways.

What I would give for the military to send us to Alaska. I so badly want to go and most everyone who knows me, knows this. It is a dream I had for a while now. Alas, my husbands job isn’t one that is available through the military for a spot in Alaska. So I wait for retirement. Like many other couples in the military we have an agreement, I follow his military career around and then he will follow mine. I can write anywhere so Alaska will be my goal!

This is really interesting. Do they have branches in the mid-west at all or have you just not been sent to any of those states because of the branch your husband is in? Funny that you want to go to Alaska. I saw the map and though, “What the heck! I would be like, ‘send me to Hawaii alraedy!'” haha.

We had the option of Hawaii but we choose being closer to my surrogate family instead. Truly I wouldn’t want to live any place hot but Hawaii would have been some place we hadn’t yet been and adventures are fun! There are certainly bases in the mid-west, just more in the south I believe!

  2. I’ve lived in 4 different states but visited 37 of them. I don’t know that I could move quite that frequently!

  3. We moved around a lot when I was a kid. I always hated it. But as an adult I am thankful for all the places I got to visit and experience.
