Rant: Selling Grown Dogs

I keep seeing people with dogs for sale, $350 for a 3 year old Italian Greyhound, neutered. The owner can’t keep it and is giving it to a friend to sell for her. This seems to be common but I just do not get why anyone would pay that price for a grown dog. A grown dog has already bonded to a family, an environment, and way of life. When buying a grown dog you can’t know what the dogs issues are, what habits it might have. You could be paying for someone elses poor job of raising it and the future costs so I am just not getting it.

(No, I am not looking for a dog, just on some pet groups.)

I am not saying don’t rehome if you must, I am not saying don’t adopt an older dog. I am saying I don’t get why someone would sell a grown dog. When we had to rehome a dog we brought to a group and gave THEM hundreds of dollars to care for the dog and get it new home. You pay a shelter an adoption fee because that building costs money, the staff, the vet, the food. You take on the risks of getting a grown dog with who knows what issues. Why would you pay an owner for that?

I have a friend that is trying to adopt a dog, she had an agreement with a lady to try and see if her dog was a good fit. My friend was told that the dog was house trained at least half time and as it turns out the dog will not go outside at all and will go in it’s crate and everywhere else for that matter. Thats not going to work in an appartment situation with small children so My friend tried to let the Lady know it was not working and to please come pick up the poor thing as it needs a family with a yard. The lady is not returning calls, not coming to get the dog, and I am thinking my friend might be stuck trying to get the poor thing a new home herself. -sigh-

Our very very old shelter dog is over 15 years old now. Thats old for a 50lb dog. We got “Lucky” he puts up with us and we put up with all his oddness. I am not sure we will ever get that lucky again and I am sorry but if we ever do get another Dog, it will not be from someone trying to sell a grown dog for what ever reasons. I just don’t get it. Giving up a dog is not responsible in many ways, charging for what ever reasons just seems to make it worse to me.

Lol…I think you and I might be on some of the same pet groups online. I’m embarrassed and saddened to see what many families on those groups think of their pet family. I have adopted adult, even geriatric dogs. I have also had to rehome dogs that don’t work in my family. I have never tried to “get my money back.” The idea of selling a dog is just repugnant to me.
