Planning a Teen Bedroom Part 1

As our daughter turns 13 this month it is more and more clear that she needs a new room makeover. She is growing up, her personality is blooming, and she has different needs than she has in years past. We think it is important to step back a bit and let her come up with a lot of the ideas for it on her own, and do a lot of the work on it herself as well.

It is all about color: If at all possible, forget the white or cream walls. Offer colors that fit their mood. My teen wants dark walls. Teens like to sleep and so dark walls actually help with this. I know for myself having dark walls helps me feel calm and peaceful, two good things when one needs to sleep well.

Don’t forget the bedding! Chances are with a new room color or colors you will need to replace the bedding as well. Think texture with accent pillows from fluffy to silky to the shapes of interests like guitars or sports balls!

Furniture: If your child does not have furniture that will move out with them by now, it might be the time to invest. We asked our daughter what she would like and when she said a high loft bed with a desk under it we thought it would be great for when she moves out, for college, for a small apartment. We do need to help her pick out other furniture for the room still though such as a new dresser and vanity.

Lighting: With the loft bed and desk under it came a new challenge, getting good lighting under it so that home work on the desk is not harder than it should be. Our daughter asked for a lamp and I tried to offer her one that I love in my craft space but it just is not her style. The Endon Lighting Retro design is more her style. It is a touch lamp and she loves those. It says retro but with the chrome it looks modern to me and would be great in a room with competing dark walls. I would love the one below, you can click on the photo to go see!

Thanks for the tips. We’re getting ready to redo our daughter’s room to a “tween” girls room!. And you’re right — color is key!
