Planning a Not Back to School Party – Homeschooling

It will soon be that time a year again when we go from fun summer adventures to fun school ones! Many people have back to school parties and many homeschoolers have “Not Back to School” parties too!

What is a Not Back to School Party?

It depends on the group of course. For some homeschool groups it is a purely fun unschooling celebration of freedom and open minded thinking and a great excuse to get together for the love of creativity and a messy fun! For others it is a small affair that is light in nature but with purpose that is a little more focused.
This year we will be going to a group party more like the first one I described and then have a second smaller one more like the second one. I have to plan the second one so let me tell you a bit more about what my oldest daughter and I have come up with so far. She would like the theme to be Ancient Greece as this was the topic she has spent a lot of time learning about. So far the to do list looks something like this:
  • Make Greek Food
  • Gather craft items to make gold like olive head pieces at party
  • Get costumes!
  • Plan back yard Olympic Games
  • Get prizes for games
  • Decorate Kitchen table with Round Table Clothes and Centerpieces
  • Display Art Work Children have done!
  • Plan activity where kids share what they would like to learn this year
This last one is very important! While many of my daughters guests will be public schoolers their ideas could add to her own and that of her younger siblings. I will be recording the ones my own children show interest in so we can further plan those out together another day and add them to our learning for this coming year. We really like child led learning though we are not labeled unschoolers as we do follow some core curriculum.
Daughter: Mom, Can I go to my party as my Favorite Greek Goddess?
Mom: Maybe, but if you don’t get your hair brushed I think you will look more like Medusa! LOL

Are you Planning a party too?
