Parent’s Guide to Childhood Asthma

With over 7 million children living with Asthma it is a topic all parents should be aware of. Sadly over 150 children die because of it each year so even if your children do not have it, this is good information to have. There are many factors that can cause Asthma and one of them that my family was closely aware of is environmental pollutants. When we lived in El Paso Texas we saw so many kids with Asthma and it was the leading cause of kids missing days of school. El Paso exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for ozone of 75 parts per billion, based on an eight-hour daily average. This was due to factories and diesel engines. The population of the city was exploding as the military base was expanding as well causing more pollution on the road ways. Schools with students closer to the highway showed to have more kids with Asthma than kids further from the highways. (and I think further from the boarder and factories and the blasting of the mountains.)

While my family has gotten lucky and none of us suffer from Asthma we feel it is important to be aware and awareness might well the lives of someone else. Too often kids with Asthma will be having an attack and no one will notice or know to get the child their inhaler or call for medical help right away with an inhaler is not available.

I feel like one of the best things we can do is try and stop Asthma before it starts, please support alternative clean energy!
