Now in Theaters: Spirit Untamed — The movie my kids needed!

SPIRIT UNTAMED – in theaters June 4 #SpiritUntamed stars Isabela Merced, Julianne Moore, Jake Gyllenhaal, Marsai Martin, Mckenna Grace and more!

Spirit Untamed reminds our hearts of the adventures we dream about. While of course the movie is about a wild mustang named Spirit, it is also about the bravery and friendship of three young girls when they see something bad happening in their community. The lesson I hope my children took away from seeing Spirit Untamed is the importance of helping those who can not possibly return the good deed, this makes truly good people with good hearts.

Spirit Untamed shows us the dark side and the hope for humanity!

In the year 2000’s the movie Spirit: Stallion of Cimarron blessed us with an adventure of Spirit that pulled at our heartstrings as we watched a wild stallion taken from his family and exploited for his strength to build a railroad. We saw him bond with a Native American who was facing threat from those same people who were intent on working the stallion to death. In the end, they were both free. I remember watching the movie thinking about how amazing it was and how important it was. I only had one child then, goodness we watched that movie a lot.

Honestly when the animated series for Spirit came out a few years ago I found myself a bit disappointed that the show seemed to focus on little girls and not the dark plight of the indigenous people and wild horses. It was more about frontier girls and seemed more bright and sunny then the first movie had been. That though didn’t mean it wasn’t full of adventure and good lessons. I wasn’t at all shocked that my children loved it. Soon out home was filled with all the horses and dolls and the barn.

The new movie Spirit Untamed is like the show, I think the lacks the dark gut retching history of the first movie. Watching it though with 6 kids ages 5 – 22, it was clear that never the less, the movie hit them emotionally in the best ways. They all loved it. They also all let me know that it is basically a summery of the show with a few changes that they were excited to explain to me in detail. If your little ones already love the show, plan to listen to them give you a dissertation on these changes too!

Spirit Untamed: Stand up for those who are not being listened to!

The main take away of this movie is a little girl named Lucky, seeing the pain and unfairness of a wild Stallion being empoisoned by criminals who treated it badly and he wanting to save the horse. While she clearly wants a relationship with the horse, she knows it needs and wants to be free, so it will provide her nothing in return for her good deeds in saving it. This is selfless service and something our society needs more of. For this, I love this movie.

One of the themes that scratched at my parenting nerve was, kids once again not listening to adults about safety issues and going off to do their own thing. What is going on with movies that promote children thinking that they #1 know everything and #2 can ignore adults who are only trying to keep them safe? Of course this is not a new theme. I am guessing that there is some kind of psychological benefit to these stories that I am not yet aware of and not simply that this is a storyline that excites children to promote movies. I am kind of going off on a tangent about this here I know and really it is a “me” issue. I think I should be perhaps less concerned about this given the fact that my homeschoolers have a lot of freedom, adore this kind of story trope, and are amazing kids with great risk assessment. More research on my part about this theme needs to be conducted I think! Let me know if you have thoughts on this too!

Spirit Untamed — Dreaming of adventure!

After over a year at home dealing with a pandemic having the chance to see a new movie was a delight. Even the older kids got excited about this movie and of course all of us watched our 5 year old closely to see what she thought. She was glued to the screen and adored it all. The new line of Spirit Untamed horse dolls and toys are bit different than the ones she had gotten from the show, and of course she is now collecting all of them as well.

The movie gave us time together as a family to dream of adventures. As many of us are now vaccinated, we can go on these adventures soon! We can’t wait till our youngest can be vaccinated and get out there. She wants to go on a train and go see wild horses. We have a wild horse beach about 3 hours away that we really miss.

This movie is beautiful and well timed as most of us can feel the pain of being locked away from our community, from many of the things we love, and how badly we want to help others.

I will point out that the show was not all sunshine and rainbows! It did go into animal cruelty of horses being beaten and taken from their herds (and sometimes other owners) it talked about lucky’s mom who was almost forced into marrying a rich man at 16 then escaped, and lucky her self does get kidnapped by butch lepray (who despite was thought to be a man actually turns out to be a women so props there!). The movie was pretty good and entertaining to watch though! 🙂

    • Thank you daughter, clearly I hadn’t watched enough of the show and didn’t pay enough attention after the movie to fully understand all the things you kids were trying to explain to me!
