A Mothers Love
It is a day that is dear to my heart not just because I have not one but two mothers but because I am also a Mother. There are many beautiful quotes about being a Mother, and a mothers love and while I always thought them lovely, there was simply no way to fully understand what a mothers love meant until I became one. I knew love growing up, and I certainly knew it as I got married, but nothing prepared me for the flood of love that came with being a mother. I have to picture it is the same for Fathers as well! Is it so instantly powerful for everyone I wonder?

I remember when I was pregnant with my second child, I worried that I might not love a second child the way I did my first. A mother’s love is consuming, near insanity even, for our little one. I had so much emotion for my daughter that I couldn’t imagine feeling all of that for another child. I am not sure now why I had such fear, and it feels like a silly thing to be concerned about, but I see the question come up over and over and so I know I was not alone. Of course as soon as baby was in arms I felt all those things again. That rush of wanting the world for them, the fierce protection from that same world, and this knowing that you can and will do anything for your child multiplies with more children. We know that it is a mix of chemicals for a Mother soon after she gives birth, and that our babies have primal tools to get the big people in their lives to meet their needs. The love we feel for them though is so much more than we can explain though I think. Until you experience it, you can’t know. It is no wonder to me at all why so many Mothers give up so much for their families.

While I think there are few things as powerfully amazing as a Mothers love I am reminded that not all Mothering comes from our own mothers. A friend recently lost her Mother, it was heart breaking to see her grief. Her words shook me to the core. “Now who will Mother me?” she asked. It was such a tragic question but also one that can give hope. Some of us are lucky enough to have others in our lives who “Mother” us from time to time. You know the friend who shows up with a family Dinner when she knows your sick? The friend who knows just what to say to make things a little better, or the person who drops everything just to hug you and listen when the world just seems all wrong.
So this Mother’s Day, share the love and gratitude to the Mothers in your life, even if they didn’t bring you into this world or raise you. There is just something so life affirming about Mothering, and we are all lucky when someone gives us that kind of love.

That struggle is so common and I wish someone would have told me about it. It is hard to wrap ones head around how anyone could care that much for one child never mind two or more! It happens though, as fast as you can blink, and it was suddenly like that second child was always there and you can’t hardly remember not feeling all that love. Your enough, you have more than enough love, and having a second child I am sure will be so natural to you! A mothers love, really is a gift!

Such a beautiful piece and you are so right about all of it. I was terrified when I found out I was pregnant but as my little one grew in my tummy the fear dissipated and turned to love. BUT I had no idea what true, all-consuming, love was until I held my daughter in my arms for the first time. As soon as I looked into her beautiful eyes my life changed forever. I am so thankful for her.
My husband and I have discussed having baby #2 and I too have the fear wondering if I could ever love another as much as I love my daughter. You just answered my question.
I am so thankful to have my mother and the special ladies in my life. I am even more grateful and honored to be called mommy by such an amazing, loving little girl.

I think all women are mothers to each other. Women are so powerful, don’t ya think? Can’t wait to enter!
I sometimes wonder if I am different from others by not having the type of mother you mention here. The closest thing I have is “work moms” but basically they would stop by and ask me how I am. My aunt who lives a state away who I have usually only gotten to see once a year for most of my life is more of a mother to me than my own was. I have been on my own for so long it’s hard to remember what it was like when I was little before things got so bad.
