Homeschooling Science – 1st Grade Sea Turtles

Why Sea Turtles?

This past vacation down in Mississippi on Biloxi beach in August I was stung by a Jelly Fish. We had seen the clear jelly fish with a red pattern on them and trailing tentacles in the water but family members in the area said they where safe and just irritated a bit.
I found this to not be the case when one wrapped itself around my ankle sending me rushing to the beach in tears where I sobbed for a long time and the pain stayed with me the rest of the day. Thankfully no one else was stung as badly. Lesson learned.
Days later we went to a different beach and found different jelly fish, these had no tentacles and they did not sting us thankfully. We set out to learn about Jelly Fish though, for practical reasons. Jelly Fish led to Sea Turtles, and so here we are.
The best homeschooling is the practical kind, the personal kind! Following a childs interest is always worthy of our time as parents.

One of the Art projects we did was from this site:

It was a good project for my 4, 6, and 12 year old. Cutting, coloring, painting, patterns, assembling, and clean up.

Great idea to turn a painful situation in to a lesson.
