Homeschoolers – Do you force your kids to get dressed everyday?

An interesting question was asked on the facebook wall and I wanted to share it here. The question is rather simple, if you homeschool, do you make your children get fully dressed each morning?

Lindy  said “Yes. I’ve battled with depression for over 20 yrs and find that 6 days outta the week I’m still in my sleep wear and then when I get dressed, makeup I feel better but its a struggle.” So for her, getting dressed helps her feel better so she has her children do the same with the idea that it also works for them.

Another homeschooling mother Alisha responded “But for kiddos, what does it matter? I don’t think it’s worth the battle if you have nowhere to go. Our kids aren’t struggling with depression, it’s very different for them and their mental attitudes. I do ask them to get dressed, but if they don’t wish to, I don’t push it. I have one little boy who hates to get dressed because of sensory sensitivity issues. So if I don’t have to change his clothes, I don’t push the issue. Sometimes I’ll even dress him in comfy day clothes the night before if I know we have to go somewhere the next morning so we don’t have to deal with that battle.”

My option is along the same lines as Alisha actually, unless we are going out or expecting company I let the kids have a say in PJ’s and such. To be honest though I love PJ days personally. Feeling relaxed and not rushed helps us focus on learning and having fun and not stressing about the world.

Someones helpful suggestion “When I’m not feeling like wearing pajamas all day, but I want to feel like I am, I put on my comfy Cherokee uniforms scrubs. How about getting your kids some really comfy clothing that feels like PJ’s too?”

Sounds like a good plan to me!
