Guest Post – How to Make Money as a Mystery Shopper

It seems too good to be true–a company pays you money to go shopping or out to eat or to have your oil changed.  In return, you file a report online documenting what your shopping experience was like as well as reporting on the cleanliness of the business and the customer service you received.

While this sounds too good to be true, it is not.  Every day there are mystery shoppers getting paid to check up and report on a business.  If you are a mystery shopper, in some cases not only will you get paid, but you may also get free things such as a free meal if you are assigned to “shop” at a restaurant.

For someone looking to make money on the side or a mom who wants a job with flexible hours while the kids are in school, mystery shopping may be a perfect fit.

Is mystery shopping really worthwhile?  Well, one blogger will receive free oil changes for the life of her car thanks to her mystery shopping gig, and another blogger typically makes $400 to $500 per month as a mystery shopper.  I would say mystery shopping is worthwhile, wouldn’t you?

How to Get Started

To get started as a mystery shopper, apply to several agencies.  Good Morning America recommends that you apply to those agencies listed as part of mysteryshop.org.  Stay away from any mystery shopping companies that require you to pay to register.  You should not have to pay to be a mystery shopper, though some jobs will require you to buy something when you are mystery shopping, and you will be reimbursed after your report is filed.

What Jobs Are Available?

Initially you may find that not many jobs are available.  Simply put, there are more mystery shoppers available than jobs, so initially, you may have to take whatever is available.  That may include mystery shops that require you to go to a gas station late at night and check on the cleanliness of the bathroom.

Hey, everybody has to start somewhere.

However, as you do more mystery shopping jobs, you should be able to choose better mystery shopping jobs.

How to Make Good Money as a Mystery Shopper

The key to getting more desirable mystery shopping jobs as well as to making more money as a mystery shopper is to stand out from other mystery shoppers that are available.  To do this, you will want to:

-file your reports on time,

-turn in reports that contain proper grammar and spelling,

-make sure your reports contain plenty of detail

Mystery shopping is probably not ideal for moms with young kids, but if your children are older or you want to find a way to make money while they are in school, mystery shopping may be ideal.  An added bonus is that not only will you be paid, but you can also receive free things like a free meal out at a restaurant or a free oil change.  Those are some nice perks!
