Guest Post: The essence of the city

New York is that crazy city we all know from movies, traveling and some of us from living there. It is the city that has a lot of everything. There are lots of restaurants, millions of people and a big number of New York photographers.

You cannot say that these photographers are somehow different from the ones in Alabama, but there is definitely something that stands out in their works. Educated by the city, these guys know how to capture a model, a building and the whole view of the greater metropolitan area.

The urban and city photography is already a separated art derived from the whole concept. The huge collision of buildings, lights, people and streets, are creating a unique emotion. When it is all captured by the camera and then printed, you can feel it. A city is always a busy place that has busy people and crowded places, but a photograph of it is silent. We all know that police or ambulance sound that is so typical for a metropolitan area. But a photograph can make you feel it, not hear it. And it can transform the ugly into the artistic. There are so many photographs of homeless people, dumpsters and just trash that do not have this aggressive air. When you walk on the street and you see it all, it seems to be ugly and simply not pleasant. When looking at an image, you’ll start searching for details that will transform the view you always ignore in real life, into an artistic representation of the city.

The best time to capture the city of course is in the early morning. The sky will help the light to be stunning and the photographs to be gorgeous. It is like a huge filter that connects the urban vibe with the gifts of the nature. And because during the day the city is extremely busy, capturing it when there is no one on the streets gives to the final photographs this interesting and different air.

The essence of the city can be seen in the tall buildings, the crazy lights and the people. There is just so much in every single photograph, when it comes to urban and city photography.
