I saw this image on facebook and I had to share it. I remember my couponing days and I remember how hard it was even all those years ago to save money on healthy things because so many of the coupons where for processed junk! I had friends who would joke that they wouldn’t feed half that junk to their kids for free even.

There is a saying I think that rings very true, pay the farmer now or pay the physician later.

But there are crunchy “brands” that offer organic, healthy, eco-friendly foods and while you will not normally find them in the newspapers come Sunday morning, you can tend to find them online and specially on the brands own website! So yes, some of us crunchy parents cut coupons, just not maybe the ones you think we do! Being on the free tooth paste I say!

Another way to be Frugal and Crunchy…. Garden!

Gardening is coming back into style with young parents who are sick of paying top dollar for organics we can’t even really be sure are organics. Many want heritage plants that are not GMO plants. While GMO has the ability to amazing in my geek mind, that doesn’t mean the technology is automatically safe and it promotes Mono crops that we know are not the kind of sustainable farming we want to support!

So back to back yard gardening… grow what you eat and then add some new things too! There are hundreds of veggies out there that we never see in the super markets any more and too often they get ignored at farmers markets because people simply don’t know what do with them. Pick a few things you think might be fun to experiment with and try growing that!

As for me, our gardens this year really impressed me. I didn’t think we would garden our first year in this new house. I didn’t think we had time. I was though very wrong. We put up some quick square foot gardens and started there. Now I am super excited about putting more in next year, a lot more! It will save us so much money shopping for veggies and hopefully some fruits as well! I might even try talking my husband into getting a bunny or two for their great fertilizer! We just added chicken poo multch to the gardens in hopes it will help a few of the plants that I think have more life in them but are missing nitrogen! Wish us luck!

If you have lettuce growing tips please do share them. I have tried 4 times this summer to grow lettuce and thus far I keep failing. Is it just too hot here in Georgia?
