Day 9 of our 365 photos for the year of 2011 was one that really makes me smile. Hope Pixie daugher, 11, wanted to make a crock pot cake on her own. I have not even tried the recipe yet. She insisted on doing it alone, 100%. She finished up her rather traditional school work and jumped into her passion for cooking. Normally though she makes something she knows how to make and for the first time making something she gets help. Not this time.
I wish I could say it was a hit… she wishes the same. It was flat out gross and we all laugh about it. She used way too much salt and read the directions all wrong and burnt the thing and made the house smell. What an adventure! It paved the way for some future plans, her rewriting recipes in the future in her own way so that she really put them in her mind and to measure things out and have someone double check her work before actually cooking.
On any given day she makes pancakes of some kind, grilled cheese, salads, prepackaged baked goods. She is driven to do things from scratch though and we are moving away from her having to wait for an adult to try a new recipe and into her picking and cooking when the time is good for her, not everyone else. It is a challenge and so worth it. We finally got a food processor and I have a feeling she will know her way around it faster than I will! I feel so blessed to know her, she has such a fun spirit, specially in the kitchen!
