Day 62

One last trip to Borders.

10 years ago Borders for a book was my idea of a fantastic day. 5 years ago it give or take it became Barnes and Noble for a book and coffee. Today, while I still love going to B&N I buy most of my books on Amazon. However when I learned of Borders going bankrupt I felt badly but not very shocked. They had not grown with the times as others had, neither small and cute and cozy like a used book store, and not yet large enough to inspire awe and wonder any more either. It was not the “Geek” place to be. A larger book store had won my heart.

While not all Borders are closing, many are. I have to wonder when the rest will follow. Tempted by the idea of cheap books my family 6 took a date to the one near us in it’s final breaths. It was like a zoo. So many people in every direction and many just standing around, some looking at books, some looking just lost. It felt horrible to see the childrens section near cleaned out. On one wall, 5 lonely books where to be seen. Just 5. Many more covered the floor, and portable racks but not many. The sale price was 20% off. I could do better on Amazon. Still, the children found a few things and I felt like it was giving to a charity, or maybe a last thank you to a company I once loved. Being military we move a lot and where once we would move and Borders was the store I would hunt for first, now it is B&N as they are simply better and I can count on them. I can’t count on Borders, not for a while now, and not for the future. So we gathered our $112 in books and made our way out. I took this good bye photo of our last trip to a Borders.
