In the colder months we all know that we keep the doors and windows closed more often than in the warmer months and this can cause a build up of indoor air pollution that just circulates in your home and in your body and this can cause more issues than just allergies. As most of us spend a lot of our lives indoor it is more and more important to be aware of and fight indoor air pollution.
Heating and Cooling and how they contribute to indoor air pollution.
Forced air for cooling or heating blow dust mites, dust, particulates, and allergens, as well as a host of other irritants around your home or office. It can also blow more dangerous things like toxic molds. These can cause a lot of different health concerns like. The World Health Organization says:
- 3.8 million premature deaths annually from noncommunicable diseases including stroke, ischaemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer are attributed to exposure to household air pollution.
That is a staggering and sad number but there are things you can do to make sure your not just blowing around air pollution in your home. Check and replace your air filters! Just check the air filter sizes and keep them stocked in your home so there is never an excuse to not use one or to not change it out.
New Carpet can contribute to indoor air pollution.
Carpet is generally produced using a variety of caustic chemicals, and they tend to emit VOC’s. If you can smell them they are getting into your body. Use an air purifier with great filters to help clear them out of the air or just buy carpets with low VOC’s.
Then there are the chemicals in plastics and electronics and woods to build homes and cabinets and furniture and chemicals in mattresses and the list goes on and on. Not to mention cigarette smoke. I would hope any of my readers would know better than to smoke or at least not do it inside harming those who choose not to smoke.
I can’t recommend good air filters and air purifiers enough, not only do they help your family stay more healthy, it just smells better!
To fight indoor air pollution and the germs associated with winter, we open our windows every day for little bit with fans going to circulate air.
