If you’ve not already had to deal with it yet, you’ll soon have to; before you know it, you’ll be faced with seas of pink and blue when all you may wish to do is keep toys unisex. While the stores are partially to blame due to the way they advertise boys and girls toys, the amount of pink and blue toys that are on the shelves nowadays is unavoidable. Little girls (especially the wannabe princesses) tend to hone in on pink stuff – whether that’s down to peer pressure and observation, or just because they like the colour pink, is your own opinion but pink toys are inevitable in some shape or form.

While you won’t find the same sort of problem with many boy’s toys, you will notice that the parts of the shop that advertise these toys to little lads will definitely have a more ‘boyish’ edge. Cars will be packed into aisles with action figures and toy guns – from the off, some little girls won’t be interested in what these aisles hold.

Luckily, at the toddler age, they won’t care so much about the colour of their toys, and the availability of vibrant, bold coloured unisex toys help to keep choices neutral for as long as possible. If you’re a bit stuck on what to get the toddler in your life this Christmas, here are some fabulous unisex ideas.

  • Little People are a superb range of chunky figures and playsets which are ideal for boys and girls. While some sets are aimed at particular markets, other sets such as the House and Farm would be perfect for toddlers regardless of gender.
  • Ride on Toys are ideal for both genders, especially if you opt for one in bold, vibrant colours rather than segregating them with pink or blue. Perhaps a rocking horse in traditional colours would suit?
  • Outdoor toys, such as sand/water tables, trampolines and slides are super as unisex toddler gifts. Bear in mind the weather at Christmas means that they won’t get played on straightaway but, if you don’t mind waiting for the play value, outdoor toys will always be a winner!

While these toys are excellent anyway, unisex gifts can also help if parents look to the future. If more children are planned, at some point, unisex toys can be put away and used again once the next child is born – with neutral toys, it doesn’t matter who they’re for – everyone will love them!
