Children’s Book Review: The Sandman

TheSandmanBook

The Sandman is an adorable story written by Ralph Fletcher and beautifully illustrated by Richard Cowdrey. The cover pulls you in right from the start with an adorable white mouse pulling a little cart behind him with a man that looks like the classic grandfather. The cover sparkles and helps add to the excite of the coming story.

The little man in the story Tor, is like me, he has a hard time sleeping at night. My son Toby mentioned this right away. He asked me if the little man has Fibromyalgia too, and I told him I didn’t know but that it isn’t very common for men to have it, though not un-heard of. The story doesn’t mention the man being in pain, but not everyone tells others about all their problems. This answer seemed to satisfy my son.

Trying to keep our 2.5 year old engaged in the story and some what still I asked her to point different things out, she specially loved the mouse.

Like so many discoveries, the little man discovers that dragon scales when ground down to a powder put people to sleep. Knowing he was not the only one sleep issues the little man started going from house to house, street to street in a cart pulled by the mouse, he sprinkled the dust on those who could not sleep and then off he went. He had to be careful when getting scales from the dragon of course, but he risked his own life and did it anyway as he just had to help others. We loved the meaning to be found in this story.

Each page has deep colors and contrast that is beautifully done with much detail. It is an adventure that all of us reading the book loved. It is a secular book with some magic and myth in it.

This is a perfect bedtime book! It has adventure and fun but doesn’t leave the children full of energy!

This book gets 5 out of 5 stars!
