Brick City travel — 4 tips for families flying from Newark

Post written by Robbie Handy

Newark Liberty International Airport serves the New York Metropolitan Area as well as a large passenger base from Philadelphia — it was the 15th busiest US airport in 2017.

It’s a great place to grab flights to overseas hotspots like Dublin, London or Barcelona or domestic destinations like Charlotte, Chicago and San Francisco.

If you’re flying with your family but aren’t familiar with the environs, you might be seeking some pre-flight advice. So here are four Brick City tips for families flying from Newark.

  • Vegan food

When your family’s committed to a plant-based diet, ensuring that everyone’s fed and watered according to their requirements can be complex.

Some airlines offer a limited selection of vegetarian meals on request — but unfortunately, you might be disappointed if you’re expecting a delicious vegan dish on board.

However, making time to eat a vibrant vegan meal at Newark’s Blueberry Café before reaching the airport means that you’ll have enough vitamins and nutrients to tide you over until you reach your destination.

  • Park life

Spending some quality family time in a serene green space before entering the hustle and bustle of the terminal might help you feel calm and composed for flying off to holiday horizons.

And just 7.9 km from the airport, Liberty State Park is a scenic oasis with plenty of picnic spaces, a pretty two-mile promenade, stunning views of the Hudson River and the emotive Empty Sky 9/11 memorial.

If you can tweak your itinerary to make space, this is a super spot to relax, reflect and revive yourself before travelling onwards.

  • Parking

You can journey from New York City Penn Station to Newark airport’s train station via NJ Transit or Amtrak and the in-house AirTrain service takes you to facilities within the air hub.

But when you’re travelling with kids, it might be more comfortable to take your own vehicle — it’s less crowded and there’s naturally more privacy.

Book Newark Airport parking with Looking4.com before you leave home and benefit from secure valet or park and fly options — then your party can take off with peace of mind.

  • Kids entertainment

If your kids are too young to entertain themselves for extended periods of time, flight delays can feel particularly frustrating for your family.

So it’s wise to do some online reconnaissance work as early as possible to scope out appropriate airport shops, eateries and activities to prep for such a potentially stressful scenario unfolding.

Scan the children’s section of the Newark Liberty International site for information on perennial favorites like Ben & Jerry’s, Ruby Tuesday and Hudson Booksellers and you’ll avoid tears and tantrums.

There’s inevitably some anxiety involved in taking a vacation with your family. But if you’re travelling from Newark, following these four tips should make the process as smooth and peaceful as possible.
