Day 148 — Book Review – Duckat

Reading a gift we give our children, ourselves, our home. It can be peaceful or exciting, it can be uplifting, humbling, thoughtful, scary, loving. All things in life can mirrored in a story and a good one will make us feel something. If you didn’t know it, I love reading! I love reading more than near anything. I of course love my family and friends more than books but putting them together is bliss.

I thought I would try and include some of the books we read into my 365, a photo a day for my blog.

Book: Duckat
Author: Gaelyn Gordon
Illustrated: Chris Gaskin

This book is funny. It follows a girl who knows a duck who thinks he is a cat. It is simply adorable. As a family who had ducks it is an animal we love already. As we have a cat we can picture a duck trying to be a cat as well. It is silly and wonderful and just predictable and rhythmic enough to capture young children. My 3.5 year old daughter and 5.5 year old son both enjoyed it. It brought up a good topic for my 5th grader as well, imprinting. Ducks are one of the strongest animals to imprint on others, they can believe that they are a human, dog, cat, cow… they don’t understand that they are not what ever it is they imprinted on. Duckat could well have imprinted on a cat. The ending however… well we will let you read it. It is funny and a great ending to the short story.
