5 Things Not To Forget Homeschooling in December

There seems to be a list of things one tends to forget for each season for me, the list in December is one of the most annoying. I thought I would share a list and maybe it will help you not forget such things too!

1. The Holiday Party

Most homeschoolers have a group or groups that they are a part of. When ever we plan to go out of town for family, I always end up forgetting the date of the party our group has. This could be because it tends to be on the solstice and this is really close to Christmas, a time we tend to have to be a few hundred miles away with family. Find out when your holiday parties as early as you can post them some place you will not forget about!

 2. Don’t Forget School Supplies Make Great Stocking Stuffers!

Chances are you have a lot of art supplies but things run out, colors get used, and there seems to always be a need for more. Stocking stuffers are a great excuse to restock supplies of new block crayons, new water colors, new paint brushes and so much more. I love how practical it is!

 3. Happy Holidays!

Remember that not every homeschooler is Christian and that there are other holidays in the winter. It can be easy to over look others and look rude or uncaring by not considering what others might believe. It can be a real issue this time of year actually. The reason for the season is different for different people and we don’t want our children to think we are rude by thinking everyone believes as we do. Wish people a Happy Holiday, it is safe and kind!

 4. Print out Your Lists!

One thing I forget to do is print out my lists, this sometimes means that DH goes shopping only to find out I had already gotten that toy for the kids. Of course you can’t print anything if your like me and also tend to forget the printer ink or laser toner cartridge or paper. We are always running out of paper! Paper remembers better than we do, print your lists!

 5. Cooking Counts As Math

There is a tradition of sorts in one of the homeschool groups I am part of, it is the tradition of letting math rest for the month, or rather focusing on hands on math such as shopping budgets and cooking. Cooking has a lot of math in it and so many people do a lot of cooking this time of year. Consider making your math lessons hands on and letting math grow in your child for the month. Many of us over the years have found that when you come back to Math in January, it is like the children understand it all the better. I don’t know why this works, it just does. It can be easy to forget though, and I did forget it so I had to change lesson plans around the last few days to make sure to accommodate doing things this way.

What ever you inevitably forget this December, please remember to be kind to yourself. We can only do so much, and your intent does matter!
