2015 Challenge – Be free of 2015 things!

Living with Less in 2015

I love new years challenges and I tend to succeed at them as often as I fail so it is always very interesting to me to see what way it will all go. I can’t tell you how I heard about this challenge, just that someone added me to a group of over 400 bloggers doing this. I didn’t think much of it weeks ago, actually I didn’t think much of it at first, then as the new year got closer I thought I wouldn’t be joining as 2015 items are a lot of things to get rid of or donate. But then I read this:

Statistics cited by professional organizer Regina Lark: The average U.S. household has 300,000 things, from paper clips to ironing boards. U.S. children make up 3.7% of children on the planet but have 47% of all toys and children’s books. – latimes.com

Organizing Group Challenge in 2015

With that in mind, I know there must logically be 2,015 items in my home that are not adding to our lives but rather getting the way. I need to be more organized this year and so this challenge sounds like it will help me be more mindful of that. You can join too!

Search for the group on facebook called 2015 in 2015 and join the blogs there being sure to follow those hosting this challenge who will be sharing lists of things we might want to consider being free of! You can also post your success on instagram and join in celebrating others liberating themselves from their stuff!

Accomplish this in 2015

To manage this in 2015, that means tossing or donating 5.52 items per day, be they paper clips, newspaper, or stray socks. Best to round up and just call it 6 things a day. That is not so hard right? One can manage this before brushing their teeth in the evening, or after their morning coffee. I think the lists will help give ideas if your not sure where to start. One of their first ideas was books. I admit, this made me sad. Who doesn’t want a house full of books? But I admit, with little kids we have books in rough shape and chances are they should be tossed anyway, so that isn’t so hard after all! If the kids love those books then I will put them on our list to replace. I wonder though, does that count for tossing things if the are just replaced? We shall see!

  1. Wow that sounds like quite the challenge. For me it isn’t getting rid of stuff but rather organizing it better. We have tons of books and as a result the shelves look so messy.

  2. I am pretty sure that we could find 2,015 things in my son’s room alone. We typically donate unused items 2x/year to make room for his birthday & Christmas. I like this challenge because it would encourage us to think about which items were unnecessary throughout the year vs purging just to make room for more gifts.

  3. my husband would love this challenge. He’s great at throwing away stuff! hahah!! But all the best, this is really not easy!

  4. Never heard of a de-clutter challenge laid out this way– very interesting and will have to consider giving it a shot.
