105 Things Not To Forget On A Family Road Trip

This list of 105 things can help you not forget to pack or do certain things when going on a road trip! Here is an example of a week long road trip for a family of 6, one is a baby, and two are dogs, and one is a cat staying home with a pet sitter. This is just a sample list mind you. My husband has amazing lists that are sorted into planning, to go, to get, to pack, to check, to pack the van, and then to check the house. His is color coded and beautiful. It is however on an excel program and I am not sure how to share that with you all. So here is a simple list that will help get you started!

Travel Packing List for a Family of 6

Now the assumption is the trip is a week long, no one wants to do laundry on vacation so pack all your clothes. Some people like to shop on vacation and so they pack a few less outfits. Some people rather do their vacation shopping online at a place like Damart to make sure they look amazing on vacation before they go. What ever you plan to do, just make sure you don’t need to pack laundry detergent and such!

The idea with this one is that at some point on the trip the family is hitting a beach so you might want to add swimmers to the toy or baby bag and swim diapers if you have a baby as well! You might also want to get some new movies for the iPad or tablet to help pass the time on the road for the kids. My kids love audio books so you might want to add them to your list.

You know your situation best so scratch off what you guys don’t need from the list and add what you do. The important part is, HAVE A LIST! My goodness! it’s like you’ve done this a time or two! Great list! As I was reading through I couldn’t help but laugh at 22… LOL! And quite often I have forgotten to lock up! Of all things 😛

Last trip I forgot to bring a pillow, had to turn around for it. I forget to bring a heat pack (Fibro back pain) and turned around for that too, and we had to turn around again because while our dogs where in their travel crated we forgot their leashes. What a trip that was. But at least everything else was covered! 🙂

  2. LOL, love this post!
I totally am with you on skipping the shaving and just get waxed.
I love to pamper myself before I go away because let’s face it if your traveling with that many it’s not going to be relaxing!

  3. We have never taken a family road trip, but it’s something we’ve talked about many times. When we finally plan one I’ll have to come back and use this super helpful checklist!

  4. I don’t think you missed anything with this list! In fact, I think I need to print it out for my next road trip!

  5. This pretty much covers everything! Checking the air in your tires before taking off is so important. I’ve made the mistake of not doing so and it delayed my trip!

  6. It never fails I forget stuff. A paper list is definitely the way to go. This is great!

Great tips here! I am going to print this out so that I can keep them ready to go!!

  8. What a great list! Usually our road trips involve just four of us, but this is a great list to keep in mind.

  9. This is a great list! I have a family of 5 and we do a lot of traveling in the summer, usually driving and this list is really great and detailed! It is so difficult keeping it all together for the whole family. Having the list is really helpful.

  10. That is a super spot on list. We go on a lot of dog friendly road trips and we always make lists. This is handy to tack onto the fridge. Thanks!

You know I find traveling with pets sooooo much harder than a handful of kids. Kids can tell you when they need to pee, when they feel sick, and no one really looks at you too funny when you take them into places! Those who travel with pets are a special kind of wonderful!

  11. I remember those days of packing all that stuff for the kids. Now that they are older I have them pack all of their own items. I still make the list though!

  12. Wow that’s definitely an impressive list! Pretty useful for a mom of seven like me whose constantly forgetting to pack something.

Husband has a database type thing with it all broken out into smaller lists but I couldn’t figure out how to share that so I just made a big list. LOL Smaller lists are fantastic, specially when you can hand a list to one of the older kids to have them get those things done!

  13. That’s such a good idea to write it all down! Especially when you’re packing for more than one!

I don’t know that I would ever remember to pack that many things. My dad always said if you forget my thing you can buy it when you get there!

With all these kids, and a military family budget, alas, buying everything forgotten would be very very costly! 🙂
