10 Fun and Festive Christmas Ornaments Kids Can Make

It’s that time of year again when Christmas is upon us. Everyone is busily decorating the house, and the kids want to help. Check out these fun and festive decorations that they can make.

Popcorn Ornaments
Stringing together popcorn is an age old favorite in that youngsters have enjoyed for decades. Fun flavored popcorn gives them something to snack on as they work, but they’re sure to enjoy regular old fashioned buttered popcorn too!

Origami
Christmas is the time of year to celebrate togetherness and cultural traditions, so bring together a couple of different ones. Parent Map’s article “10 Homemade Christmas Ornaments That Kids Can Make,” also loves this idea!

Clay Models
When children are crafty at sculpting, they can make crosses and nativities to stand as a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas or symbols that really represent the family’s interests and hobbies.

Play-Doh
An alternative to clay, as suggested by Parent Map, is to make ornaments out of Play-Doh. Little ones rejoice at sculpting with their favorite medium, and parents can bake the finished products to make them hard.

Paint and Paper
No need exists to be extremely fancy. With paint and paper, children can create beautiful scenes. You can punch a hole in the top, add some yarn and it’s a gorgeous product!

Paper Mache
Generally considered to be a bit more difficult than some of the other mentioned ideas, paper mache is excellent for older children or those with strong skills in the arts.

Thumbprint Reindeer
Parent Map suggests asking children to put their fingerprint on an ornament with paint. Using pipe cleaners, paint and/or markers, this little fingerprint can magically turn into one of the most beloved characters of all times: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!

Gumdrop Ornaments
Here’s yet another idea that comes from Parent Map. Put together gumdrops on Styrofoam balls and the ornaments will be as beautiful as all of the colors of the rainbow. It’s sure to tempt children into snack-time, so provide some goodies while they work.

Leaf Ornaments
Winter starts only a few days before Christmas, so it’s entirely appropriate to put fall decorations on the street. Little ones love going for nature walks and picking up leaves, and with a simple hole and piece of yarn, these collections become decorations. Allow children to decorate the leaves with glitter or sparkles for some fun.

Candy Ornaments
When candy comes into play, everyone has fun. Kids can hang candy canes on the tree, or they can make beaded ornaments with Smarties or other yummy little candies.

Whichever type of ornament you decide to make, please be sure to make certain it is safe to use with your tree in terms of fire safety.
