You know you homeschool when your child asks for a DNA Extractor for Christmas!

My dear sweet boy who just turned 9 has a lot going on! He is lucky to be able to spend so much time working on his passions, currently he has put a lot of thought into his future. He wants to be a scientist and he wants to create Dinosaurs. Why boy doesn’t right? However I had no idea just how deep this had gotten till he asked if he could put a DNA Extractor on his wish list…..

Mom: Um… wow…. what exactly does that do?

Son: It is a machine that extracts DNA.

Mom: From?

Son: Samples, you know, like our living Dinosaurs, the chickens in the yard. Specially I think the rooster.

Mom: Ok….. but you know those have to cost a lot of money right?

Son: About $40,000 but everyone keeps saying Santa can do anything and magic and stuff.

Mom: ……

Son: Santa isn’t real is he.

Mom: …… I…. just…..

Son:   <blinking at me>

Mom: So if Santa gives gifts to millions of kids he needs to have a budget.

Son: So no magic?

Mom: …… Oh bloody hell, just put it on your list! (said laughing)

And off he went very happy with himself. He doesn’t believe and I need to let go! Not my best parenting moment of course. I know Minecraft has to be to blame for this, some how! Of course it could be the new Jurassic Park movie coming out next year too. I wonder if dear son looks at our chickens and sees Dinosaurs in them. I just see silly wonderful chickens. Mr. Handsome (is it weird to call your son that?) is the Egg King, his title, as he collects the eggs each day. He takes his job seriously and is always looking for reasons why perhaps certain hens are not giving him eggs on certain days. Last night he noted it was far too cold. I agree, it was below freezing. 7 eggs a day down to just 3! Maybe his interest in chickens is really about his interest in Dinosaurs? What ever the case is, I think we will definite work more on the genetics of breeding for color and letting him research goals for that. It isn’t a DNA Extractor, and it takes a long time for theories to pan out or not, but it is a good start.

Anyone have a DNA Extractor for sale by chance?

  1. I think you can extract DNA from an onion using a blender. Or something like that…sounds like it would be fun to try. Good luck with your little scientist!
