Why I can’t buy a Cheap Mattress

My dear bed mattress is 10 years old and on it’s last spring. I know it needs replacing but I just can’t bring myself to get a cheap one so we need to save save save for a natural bed. Why?

We spend near 1/3 of our lives in our beds and sadly most beds are filled with chemicals that off gas for a very long time. Why do mattresses have chemicals sprayed on them to begin with one wonders? To meet the laws made to protect us, the laws that say a mattress needs to be flame resistant. Don’t we want a mattress to be flame resistant? Why of course but they do not need to be sprayed with toxic chemicals both bad for our health and our environment.

You can get a flame resistant mattress that is NOT sprayed with chemicals, but they are not cheap. Chemicals as it turns out are cheap and that is why most every mattress is coated with them. Pay cheap for a mattress now and pay a lot to a Doctor or years of ones life later. So I guess the only thing to do now is pick the safe mattress we want and save for it.

I think we will go with a natural wool mattress or a Horse Hair mattress. They have fabric covers that make them flame resistant and not toxic. Wool on it’s own is flame resistant actually. We love wool and thankfully no allergies to it. Wool is also water resistant, that’s good when one tends to have little ones in bed too and they can have all kinds of accidents!

I have not yet picked out the perfect mattress for us yet, we really need to feel how firm they are to pick one and finding some place local that has them has proven difficult. We might have to blindly shop online actually going with firmest and adding a feather pillow top to it if needed to make it softer. I hope we pick something soon though!
