Sugar Glider Care

Along with being a home school family we are also animal lovers.
We have 2 sugar gliders and photos around here some place!

Maybe of our friends think they are adorable and ask if they are easy pets. They aren’t. The males have scent glands and can smell like ferrets, even when cages are cleaned often. It is not because of poor diet, though a bad pellet diet with additives that are not tested to be healthy can reduce their scent. Gliders eating nature diets do what they are naturally supposed to do, they scent their territory. It takes a lot of work to stay on top of it. Getting sick and not cleaning the cage is not an option (ask me how I know!)

These are very rewarding pets to have, they are adorable, and perfect for those up late at nights, when these guys are most active. There is just so much to learn about these animals and is not something to get into lightly.

One of the worst places to get real information about them are pet shops, flea markets, malls, and conventions. In my opinion and that of many other glider owners The mill breeders are known for inbreeding and sick gliders. I believe that their care instructions have caused many glider deaths. They say your glider can be best friends with your cat and your dog…. while some people might have tried this and it worked out ok for a moment, lets use common sense here. Gliders are pray animals and many other house hold pets will see them as food at one point or another!

A great short video about the glider sites that look honest and real but aren’t can be seen here:
