While we have still hit the high 90’s the last few weeks in the temps, this week is low 80’s and beautiful. It is a reminder that Fall is coming. We have been tending our raised square foot gardens and planning for what will come out and what will go in. We have also decided that at some point this winter we will move our square foot gardens. That will be a real pain but it must be done. I want to find some other great ways to garden, specially for those who rent or who have dirt or soil or sand not so conducive to their planting plans!
This is how our Spring Garden started!
If you search the blog you can learn more about it and the layering method we used for the soil.
Please excuse the high grass! We let it flower for the bees and higher grass is better for the wild life. The wild life though and our own chickens is part of the reason we need to move the raised garden beds we made, they need to be protected!
For now though while making new raised beds in the new area we will replant this one and 2 others where they are and move them in the winter!
We did other raised beds and managed 6 watermelons from 2 plants in 2 square feet. We put the vines up and the water melons hung. We think we will do it again next year this way as well.
Cucumbers did great!
This is what the above garden looks like now:
I do apologize that the sun was setting when I took the photo and it is hard to see. The tomato plants took over a lot of this garden but because they are going eat to west, they didn’t block the sun so it worked nicely! The spearmint did wonderfully and I trimmed it back twice now. It will be replanted in the new area. The garden sage did well and will be replanted as well. There is a pepper plant trying to do it’s thing but I expect we will be pulling it soon to plant more of the cooler weather crops in it’t place.
We failed time and again to get lettuce to grow here in Georgia in the summer, it was just too hot. I hope though fall will be amazing for greens for us! We put broccoli in today and cauliflower as well. We will do radishes and carrots, and as mentioned, many kinds of greens like butter lettuce and kale. I also hope some green beans and winter strawberries thrive as well! There are many things you can still plant depending on where you are and what you set up you can manage!
As we are still new I am unsure as to what to do about the watermelon plants flowering again. Should I just pull them all out and plant a different crop of give them more time knowing Georgia will be warm for a few more months? I admit, it is hard to pull things out even when I have other plants that I know must go in!
I will keep you updated!
Hey Kimberly, I too have a square foot garden. Actually two of them! 4×4 feet each. It is amazing how much you can fit into such a small space. I sorta neglected mine this summer and in turn I was rewarded with a horrible tomato crop! I was considering starting a fall harvest to make it up to myself because I love fresh veggies. I just haven’t decided what I would put in and if I can commit time to the upkeep.
You know I don’t think fall upkeep is going to be too hard, a lot of it is root veggies for my family and leafy greens. I hope the broccoli goes well! We found that our chickens helped themselves to our little broccoli plants today and we had to plant more and put up a temp fence. You deserve fresh veggies!
