Dot-to-Dot Free Printable S is for Snake Numbers kids love nature worksheet

You might have noticed that littlecrunchy.com doesn’t yet have other Dot-to-Dot Free Printables about letters! That is because I was just inspired to start making these for my little ones and other Students. Over and over I am shocked at how poorly educated many adults are when it comes to Snakes! It is vital that we help our children fall in love with nature and teach them how to respect it!

There are horrible diseases spreading around the country right now, like lyme disease spread by ticks! One of the ways we can help battle ticks on the front lines is to make sure our environment has a healthy population of Snakes as it turns out! Snakes eat the rodents that actually have the diseases that ticks then pass on to us! Save the yard snakes!

Inspired today to make this Dot-to-Dot Free Printable about snakes thanks to a lovely photographer who posted online in the Ocean Springs facebook group asking if anyone could help identify this snake!

Some of the replies made me take a deep breath and remind myself most of the “snake hate” comes from those who just do not know better.

Some people said things like:

  • It’s venomous!
  • Kill It
  • Burn the house down
  • Remove it’s head

Of course some people just exaggerate and are silly, others are snake killers and proud of it. Thankfully the lovely lady who spotted this snake had no interest in harming it! She gave me permission to use her photos to share with all of you!

The importance of teaching children about snakes!

We have to make sure our children know better! We have to help them be as comfortable in nature as they with their ipads! The biggest part of that is of course getting them outside to love being outdoors but the second part is making sure kids are educated about wildlife! In addition to teaching children about the benefits of having snakes around, teaching them to keep an eye out for them by understanding their behavior might even save their lives!

When I saw the photo of this snake I knew I had to know just what it was! I couldn’t identify it off the top of my head actually! A bit of research and there it was! So I posted this reply:

You are right! Not venomous! you can tell by the head shape, not enough of a triangle to it, but also the eyes are not hooded and the pupils look round! This is an Eastern Garter Snake! I didn’t believe it at first as I thought all garters were 1. smaller and 2. had stripes! Learn something new everyday! Thank you for posting this! He will help fight lyme disease and other tick born illnesses! You can check out his twin on this site, the second image down! https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php…

She agreed, this is an Eastern Garter Snake! Then she posted this photo!

“I feel silly, your photo is awesome and some how makes him look huge! LOL I kept thinking, I have never seen a garter that big! Now that I actually pay more attention to the photo, I can see the clover…. showing his size isn’t so very big after all. LOL”

One thing is for sure, this snake if more of a benefit than a threat!

Thanks to this snake for inspiring this free dot-to-dot printable! As you can see, my printable snake IS venomous! It has a triangle head and slanted eyes! One of my daughters did this printable and then looking up some snake designs and colored it in beautifully! We hope you enjoy this free numbers dot-to-dot printable!

My twins had a field trip a few weeks ago out in a conservation area. I was really proud to hear that when a snake was found, they left it be because they knew it was in it’s home =) Mommy on the other hand probably would have still ran the other way.

Running away is totally a legal move for those who don’t like snakes! Though moving quickly in the wrong situation can get people bitten! Keep safe!

  2. I know they eat harmful pests but I am terrified of snakes. I had one coil up around my bike tire when I was a kid when I was putting my bike away. My heart still races whenever we come across one when we are out hiking in the woods and I speed up my walk a little bit 🙂 That was nice of you to offer the free printable. I am sure kids will enjoy it!

They are for sure a creature that demands respect and space! They are serving a very Noble cause and I think don’t get enough credit for it!

  3. We get a lot of snakes in our garden. My kids seem to love them – call them “Slytherins.” I do like to read up on the harmless kinds. Where I live, most will leave well enough alone.
My son is going into first grade and appreciates the printable!

  4. What a great lesson for young kids. I am definitely printed this out for my niece who is learning her ABC’s.

  5. So, I have to tell you, sometimes it’s a good idea to instill a little bit of a healthy fear of snakes into kids. Two boys in my eighth grade class got banned from all field trips for eternity when they started catching baby rattlers at a ghost town. Of course, this may be a middle-of-nowhere desert folk problem, everyone I meet now thinks I made this up.

Respect for snakes and really all wildlife is truly important!

  6. My little one is only going to daycare a few days each week during the summer. I need fun ways to keep her little brain busy on the days she’s home. She’ll love learning her letters with fun dot to dots like this one.

  7. Great article Kimberly and wonderful the awareness you bring with snakes. They are very beneficial. We often think of garter snakes with stripes, but they do come in a variety of colors and patterns. Thank you for sharing. 🙂
