Parenting: What NOT to get your kids for Easter

Parenting Tip: Don’t Get Pets For Easter!

It is that time of year again when it seems like all over the place we see adorable baby bunnies and chicks and ducklings and goodness our children would be so happy to have them as pets, for a little while anyway. But while it might be fun at first, is it really what is best? Sadly 90% of easter pets do not survive their first year. Parents have the best of intentions but I have seen it time and again. Heck some parents that failed those animals in years past, keep getting them!

If you have not deeply researched and prepared for these interesting farm animals, please don’t do it. Too many die because of neglect, abandonment, die accidently at the hands of children and are killed by other pets that “would never do that” until they do.

I feel like this is very important because I post so much about our adventures over the years with chicks and ducklings. We researched a lot, and even practiced hating and caring for these animals years before we actually got to keep them. We would hatch for a farm, and after the chicks/ducklings were a few weeks old we would return them to the farm. We couldn’t keep them in the area we lived then but we knew someday we could and so we practiced. Maybe you can find a farm and practice first too, get your feet wet! What ever you do, don’t just jump in blind!

makeminechocolate.org and other organizations out there are a great resource for those who are clearly thinking about having farm animals and want to weigh this desicion carefully.

Now that the warning is out of the way, here are our 4 adorable new ducklings! (Yes, our chicks are 8 weeks and I promised new photos and they are coming!)
