Mr. Handsome – How to get him to cut his hair!

Normally we follow this simple belief in our home. His hair, his choice. This goes for clothing, and all sorts of things and for all the kids. As we are crunchy and have crunchy values we believe it is his body and his choice so when he was a baby we didn’t get him circumscribed. There are many valid reasons not to. He was born perfect, like his sisters, and we felt no need to risk so much so he could “look” like Daddy. He can choose to change this when he is older. Respecting him in this way carried over. Again, his hair his choice.

And so his beautiful hair gets long from time to time. So many awesome soft curls! I admit, I love them! He is such a great kid, so kind and sweet and smart. We call him Mr. Obvious as he loves sharing the news and making connections and putting things into words. These days thanks to the Lego movie his favorite saying is “everything is awesome” and he right, it is!

Only we moved to Georgia a few months back and it is hot, hotter than any of us like. Mr. Handsome plays a lot too…. and he has been getting dizzy in the sun I noticed. Not to mention all the leaves and grass I keep finding in his hair. His head seems to sweat a lot as well, and finally he said it one day. “Mom, I think my head stinks….” Of course the answer is to go and wash it! Of course he does, but unlike his sisters, his little sisters his hair is just so thick and heavy and I kept thinking it would be easy if he got it cut.I brought up the idea a few times, and he said he would think about it. A few times he said it was a great idea, but we never managed to go and get it done. Sometimes hechanged his mind.

(Mr. Handsome loves getting eggs from the chickens!)

Finally, I did it…. I took him out, he and I, with the understanding that we was going to help mommy do the grocery shopping. He loves helping and he knows this he gets a lot of say in what we buy. Only first I took him some place to get his hair cut. I sprung it on him. I gave him a minute to back out and when he didn’t, we went for it!

Part of the problem was that the lady asked me if he was a boy or girl….. he of course heard her. She then wondered why he didn’t want to talk to her. She felt badly and of course wanted to talk to him all the more and make it better for him!

I felt badly for springing the whole thing on him, and not making sure the hair dresser wouldn’t ask such a question by making it clear first off that I ended up promising him a toy. He hadn’t asked or expected and it didn’t distract him the way I wanted it too. Oh the guilt!

But then it was done! Two minutes out of the building and he was so happy about his hair. I asked him why he had not told the hairdresser he liked it and he admitted she intimidated him and he got shy. He loves his hair now. I am glad I sprung it on him after all. Of course if he had said NO I would have respected it. Sometimes though we all need a bit of a push to change something! Knowing him I am betting he will want to let it grow out till next summer again. So be it! Goodness I love him.
