Messy Kindergarten Learning Fun!

Homeschooling Kindergarten this year has been so much fun. Maybe because we love making a mess and love games. It is not hard to find games for any subjuct, just search online! From kindergarten and first grade math games to Maryland state standards, it is all really easy to find things quick and jump in!
One of the projects we jumped into this week was Soap Clouds!
Directions:
1. Place a IVORY soap bar into a clean Microwave.
2. Set the timer for 1 minute at a time.
3. Let child count down backwards with the microwave the numbers
4. Observe the Bar change into a blob of white mess and watch your child’s eyes as they light up with wonder and excitement!
5. Wait a minute and then let an adult open the microwave to move the blob around carefully to see if all of it has expanded. Microwave again for 30 seconds if you find hard lumps still. Be careful as these lumps can be very hot!
6. When it is one big light and cool blog remove from the microwave and place in a large bowl or plate.
7. Let child touch and describe it and compare what it now is with what the bar was like before.
8. Add some washable paint to the soap cloud and make it all colorful.
9. Push into cookie molds
10. Remove from molds and place some place to harden.
Have fun with soap in the bath tub!
Warning: I had thought I had gotten all of the soap off the dish but seems I was wrong as my dishwasher soon flooded my kitchen with soap suds. It was so funny but if we didn’t have much time that day it would have been less funny and more annoying! Make sure all things that touch the Ivory soap get well washed before hitting a dishwasher!
One of the great things for my family is that this messy project lines up with a state educational requirement! Kindergarten Science Chemistry:

TOPIC

A. STRUCTURE OF MATTER

INDICATOR

  • 1. Compare the observable properties of a variety of objects and the materials they are made of using evidence from investigations.
OBJECTIVES
  1. Examine and describe various objects in terms of the materials, such as clay, cloth, paper, etc. from which they are made.
  2. Based on data, describe the observable properties, such as size, shape, color, and texture of a variety of objects.
  3. Identify and compare the properties of materials objects are made of and the properties of the objects.
So this added to that nicely don’t you think?
Remember that even if you do not homeschool, you can afterschool! Afterschooling is a movement where parents take an active role in their children’s education after school and on weekends. No matter how you help your child learn, make it fun! I can not say it enough, make a mess, play games, and have a blast!

What a fun learning activity! My son is really going to have fun with this one…and probably make a huge mess. At least the activity calls for soap, so we’re half way to clean once the mess is made!

This is great to know! I may also be homeschooling a kindergartner in a few years! With here in Hawaii or in Maryland. I’m going to start keeping up with your blog!
