Being pregnant can put a mom-to-be in a stressful yet exciting situation. Nothing ever really compares to knowing you will be expecting a little loved one soon! However, there’s also so much to do in order to keep them safe, healthy, and comfortable when they arrive in this world.

You staying healthy and reading up on pregnancy are a given, of course, but there are other things you need to consider while you’re preparing for your baby’s grand entrance. Read on to find out.

Visit the Doctor

By the time you miss a period, your baby’s genetic makeup may be complete. During such time, the organs are developing, which is why it is important to schedule a visit to an OB if you think you’re pregnant. Your doctor may want to see you as early as possible, usually around eight weeks after your last menstrual period, to listen for your baby’s heartbeat and confirm the pregnancy.

During this time, an ultrasound may be done to determine how far along you are in your pregnancy and when your due date is. During this test, which will probably be done through a transvaginal approach, you will be asked to lie on your back as an ultrasound transducer is inserted into your vagina to best capture an ultrasound image of your uterus.

Start Your Baby Registry

To help you with preparation, putting together your baby registry is one of the most convenient things to do. The second trimester, particularly the sixth month, is an ideal time for you to start making a list of your baby’s needs.

You don’t want to shop for your newborn’s essentials much later in your pregnancy when you’re at your heaviest and most uncomfortable. The great thing about registering is that you can also share this list to your family and friends—making it much easier for them to give you presents and help prepare a baby shower.

Set Up Your Nursery

While you still have the energy, start setting up your child’s nursery. Doing so as early as week 20 is ideal, as some furniture may take up to 12 weeks to get done and delivered to you.

The essential things to include are a bassinet, a changing table slash dresser for your baby’s clothes, bed linens, towels, diapers, wipes, and a baby bathtub. And while the nursery is made essentially for your baby, you should also consider your own comfort and convenience when setting up this space in your home.

Enroll in a Childbirth Class

Even if it’s not your first, pregnancy can be a different experience every time, which is why enrolling in a childbirth class is an excellent step to take before the baby arrives. A childbirth class educates moms-to-be about labor and birth and how they can prepare for it.

During the class, a trained childbirth instructor will conduct lectures, exercises, and discussions about everything mothers need to know during labor and delivery. It also educates expectant mothers on effective relaxation techniques, which will be extremely helpful once labor comes.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by all the things you need to prepare before you give birth, but when you know what to do, you’ll find out how pregnancy can be a fun and enjoyable experience too.
