Homeschooling Secular Easter – Printable

How we homeschool around Secular Easter

Not every homeschool family is obber religious as you might well know. Some actually go out of our way to be secular, or free from religion. Others go out of their way to put modern religions in the same box as they do ancient religions, sharing the facts without the beliefs or dogma. My family being very much geeks enjoys science and we try to teach religion much like we do mythology. Easter brings with it a bit of history depending on the grade, opportunities for language arts, science of course, social studies, and with the worksheet on this page, recording some memories.  We also love arts and crafts and finding different ways to color eggs of course. We really enjoy doing Secular Easter.

The Science of Breeding Chickens For Egg Color

In addition to the modern secular traditions many families have of a grand dinner, beautiful fresh flowers, and hunting Easter eggs we have gotten into breeding chickens for egg color. We have some blue eggs, green, and deep browns and are striving to make those colors more deep or bright speckled. We hope to hatch some olive eggers soon. Kids care for and tend to a range of breeds to create these colors, some pure and some mixed. Keep track of it all can be a challenge and this year the kids are working on keeping great notes, one of the most important skills in science. There is actually a mixed breed of chicken very popular in America right now called Easter Eggers for the range of their colored eggs!

Easter is a time to celebrate Spring…. and a bit of Zombie Jesus

As our children will tell anyone who reads their answers to this Homeschool printable Secular Easter for us has a lot to do with Spring, new life, baby animals, planting, yard work, along with egg dying, crafts, yummy foods, and treats, and fun outside. For our oldest child we also have a tradition surrounding the “zombie jesus” joke. That though is a post for another day! Here in GA we do not start Spring planting till Easter as to avoid the last frost. We have learned this the hard way and taken this advice from long time farmers in the area. With planting comes more science of course. We are constantly learning and testing one hypothesis or other.

Sometimes we feel like we are being beaten over the head with religion and some choose to ignore certain Holidays. Most religions took holidays from other religions before them so we feel justifies in making many holidays into secular traditions.
