You know the stereo types for homeschoolers right? Either they are super geniuses who are anti-social, religious brain-washed kids who never leave the house or church, or neglected abused kids being hidden at home. I can tell you that none of those apply to my children or any of the homeschoolers we know. One of the best kept secrets of homeschooling might be just how social and out of the house many of us are. We are not tied down to school schedule we can up and travel when ever we please. In fact we know families who saw super storm Sandy coming and choose to go on vacation in a part of the world not under threat of disaster. Other families on the other hand packed up supplies and headed into the disaster areas with the kids to help out those in need. Homeschooling is really very freeing.
Of course my children know this and are often planing trips all over the place. From trying to talk us into Disney to finding things to do in London. They are full of ideas and lists and plans. Honestly it is me that sometimes needs to be pulled out of the house, not them. My children can be found out in the world doing all sorts of things from volunteer work to simply playing at parks and interacting with kids and adults of all ages, not limited to just children of their own ages. Homeschooling is not an excuse to simply stay home, as much as my pain condition would like it to be. Homeschooling has pushed past the stereo types and is now a busy out in the world lifestyle for most of us. You can find us all around the world, at all hours, actually living and learning and not stuck in a room looking out a window dreaming about being some place else. If my children are dreaming, they are planning because they know can get out and they know they can see the world.
