Laptops Need Insurance!

This is not a post to try and get you to buy insurance but rather another reminder to myself why I always purchase it now for electronics like laptops! You see my 3 homeschooled children each have a laptop, we got them when our youngest was 5, her brother was 7, and our now 14 year old has had one for a while. We do have a desktop still but that seems to be a machine no one goes to unless they can’t get on their own laptops.

One of the down sides to laptops is that they go all over the place, and they fall all over the place it seems too! Our now 6 year old broke her laptop less than a month ago, how is uncertain beyond the fact that it stopped recognizing it’s hard drive. We took it into best buy and they shipped it out and as it was over thanksgiving holidays it took about 10 days. It is back now though and all is well!

The second laptop that needs to be sent off is a lenovo that my husband had built to his needs. It has a touch screen and flips around so he can use it as a tablet. (he never does!) Some how the L key doesn’t work and his keyboard goes all wonky making him force them down in what looks like a violent battle. Alas, it is a battle he is not winning as now the thing over heats. He has insurance on it through that company so he needs to mail it back. Fun! Even the adults need insurance it seems.

Now the 14 year old needs to have her laptop brought into the Geek Squad at Best Buy because it fell off a bunk bed (The kids like to play on them before bed) and the screen cracked a bit. Then it some how got stepped on, and it cracked more. THIS is what accidental damage insurance is for, this is why we get it for 2 years! Our homeschoolers like my husband and I are little geeks. Yes we are a little crunchy but we are a lot geek! While many crunchy homeschool families shun TV and screen time, we embrace it. Sure there are down sides, but there are benefits too! More we think than the down sides, including the costs of having geeky homeschool kids who are alas, kids, and kids break things! Heck, adults break things! So next time I am shopping for tech and grumble about the cost of insurance on things, I hope I remember that we have had to have laptops replaced 4 times this year and the iPad 3 times in the last 2 years and a 3DS replaced too!
