How do you homeschool 4 children?

You do so creatively!

My oldest daughter is currently 13, then my 7 year old son, and then my 5 year old daughter, and then our 2.5 year old baby girl. I don’t do official curriculum with the baby but I will say she is starting to read and spell and certainly enrichment learning time with her accounts for part of our day. So for this reason, lets say I homeschool 4.

One of the things we do is learning units, or as some call them, waldorf lesson blocks. This means we can teach one topic but on different levels depending on the child. It is really such a blessing to be able to do this.

Another thing is that we make sure to have rhythm in our day, so when my oldest daughter is working on her hand writing, so in my son. When my oldest daughter is reading, my son knows he can have my help on his online lessons, when it is circle time, all the kids know we are doing things together. For other homeschoolers nap times play into this as well, not to mention out of the house lessons and friend time.

One of the things we specially love about homeschooling all of our children are the field trips. This past holiday vacation we went to the Providence Children’s Museum. We have a membership there actually as we like to go when we visit family up north. What I had failed to consider in my planning was that it was holiday break for public schoolers as well, meaning the place was PACKED. It was so much harder to follow 2 kids and their 2 cousins around, even with 7 adults as there simply where so many little people and parents trying to keep up! My advice, plan homeschool trips for school days and school hours as it gives your children better opportunity to learn from the experiences as they are more able to do the things they want to do!

Next year my daughter will be going to an online school, having her own teachers, and my job will simply helping when she needs it. not making the lesson plans and doing the actual teaching. I am kind of excited about this chance to focus more on the younger children and give my daughter a better idea of public school work loads. It is rather costly, about 3k but hopefully worth it. We honestly spend that much during the school year on school things ourselves.
