Guest Post – Why same sex marriage should be legalized

Imagine that moment, your eyes meet across a crowded room and suddenly you know, you’ve found your soul mate, ‘the one’. Some of us have felt this feeling and some of us are still waiting for it, but what if that uncontrollable feeling of love is for someone of the same sex?

Falling in love isn’t something we choose to do and often, when you’ve found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with marriage seems like an obvious next step. However, if you are in a same sex relationship this isn’t always possible. Although there are a number of countries and jurisdictions that have legalized same sex marriage there is still a long way to go before it is an option for all couples.

So, why should we be legalizing same sex marriage?

Every human being should be entitled to civil rights and liberties; by refusing to allow same sex couples to marry we are refusing them just that. Who are we to state what type of relationship is right or wrong?

Equally, the definition of love does not differentiate between genders.

By refusing to allow same sex couples to marry we are also denying them the same benefits associated with marriage that other couples are entitled to.

For example, health care and insurance will not cover your partner if you aren’t married and therefore same sex couples are exempt from the benefits of their partner’s policies. This also applies to medical rights, marriage allows your partner to make life altering decisions on your behalf when you can’t. If same sex couples cannot marry then they are also unable to make those decisions.

The Bill of Rights states that the rights of minorities should be protected, this includes equal protection and therefore, denying marriage to a same sex couple is the same as denying a bi-racial couple the ability to marry.

The First Amendment of Constitution states ‘an individual’s religious views or lack thereof must be protected’ this therefore means that, if same sex couples opt for a civil union as opposed to a church wedding the government should allow them. A state marriage is not a secular activity and laws should not be passed based on religion.

No one should be denied the right to marry for love and that is why same sex marriage should be legalized.

Sometimes, finding your ideal partner requires a little help and more and more romantic hopefuls are turning to the Internet to find a match, especially when it comes to gay or bi dating. Did you meet your soul mate online? If you did, we’d love to hear your love story.
