Saying Goodbye to Lucky Dog

This holiday season seems specially hard for so many. Another hardship has befallen my home, we are saying goodbye to our 16 year old dog Lucky today.

Lucky

For the past year we have been trying so hard to get him to eat, having been making food from scratch to get him to gain his weight back and begging him to eat. It has been very hard. On a walk today he simply fell over and would not get back up. Our 13 year old daughter taking him on the walk had to carry him home and even under weight he is not a small dog. When he was home he was laying down and peed all over himself. He looked so sad. He does not going to the bathroom in the house, on the rare times he does it, he always looks so ashamed.

We got Lucky some 12 years ago from a rescue in Georgia. He was a grown dog then and a vet told us about 4-5 years old. That would make him about 16 now. He had gone through a few homes before ours the rescue had told us. We couldn’t figure out why though, he was such a great dog. We spent a long time trying to teach him how to fetch, he never did learn. He never chewed things up, hardly barked, and loved everyone. He was not a guard dog, though he did growl at someone he thought made our daughter cry.

He has moved 7 times with us and traveled all over the country. He is really great on car trips. We had planned on taking him with us up north this holiday but that was not in the stars for him.

Today he will go to the vets and not come home. Star dust to star dust…. We will miss him dearly.

Thank for loving us all these years Lucky. You have been a blessing in our lives.

We love you. Always.

This is such a tough thing for families to deal with! We’ve only had our Henry for a little over a year and I can’t imagine the day when he is old. Praying for you guys this weekend!

I’m so sorry for your loss! It sounds like Lucky was quite a special dog, who carved a special spot in your heart. Unfortunately, when we have pets, they usually die before us and take that special bit of heart with them. Of course, they help our hearts grow bigger to begin with, but it doesn’t make having a bit of your heart ripped out any less painful. I hope you can find some peace through these trying times.

Oh, I am so sorry! That is so hard. Pets really do become a part of the family even in the smallest way. Poor little guy. It can be difficult to let go and say goodbye, but you are doing the right thing. I’m glad that you were able to enjoy him for so many years!

Your quotes saying how hard it is. I can really feel it too as we had a similar situation with our Lulu. It was the right thing to do but words can not find the goodbye quotes needed for such a special family member. Your hearts will mend and you will be able to look back at your memories of Lucky with a big smile. Be thankful for what he brought to you and for what you were able to give him.
