A few weeks ago the area I live on was hit by a land hurricane known formally as a derecho, It knocked out power for some for days and for others it was over a week. Baltimore was specially hit hard. It is a mess. It came out of no where and was gone just as fast, but left a long impact, damage, and death behind it.
We where one of the very rare lucky ones to still have power, I think in part because the military post we live on put up a power station down the street from us. A good arm could make a rock hit it from my door step. I don’t like living so close to one of these feeling like I remember there being negative health effects but having no choice in the matter as far as the military is concerned I have chosen to try and ignore it and worry a bit less. I found myself thankful to the thing in that storm though.
We had friends without power come over to excape the brutal heat. It was nice to have company but goodness I felt badly for them. It was another reminder to be ready for such emergencies. I was able to give one friend a few flash lights, bottled water, and a few glass candles. Flash lights only go so far and even with the heat candle light was more than welcome. The stored quickly emptied of all three things. I always have them though. Our tap water is questionable and so we drink bottled water, so that is always around and my husband is a military nerd meaning he likes gadgets to help him feel prepared and I love candles so we have many. Below is a photo of what my mantel looks like right now.
