Farm Field Trip – Homeschooling

We feel very lucky to live not too far from Offutt Ridge Farm. Year afer year we have gone to explore and learn about farm life and pick up an incubator and eggs. The last two years we have hatched duck eggs, this year though we will hatch chickens.

Even with a rainy muddy day we had a nice visit!

FarmChicken

There are many different kinds of chickens on the farm and over hundred of them. Many of them run around the farm free as birds. One never can tell what mix breed chickens and ducks one might get when hatching. The children followed around the farm mother collecting warm eggs and loved searching for them. They specially love the tiny pink eggs. I will be sure to post photos of the eggs soon!

The farm adopts many animals from goats to horses. Our storm baby who is now 5 loved bonding with the new little mini pony on the farm. Even our 2 year old who is not really interested in animals came over to pet the pony. Next time we go we will have to bring the horses some treats!

We where sure to bring bread and the chickens loved following the children to get pieces. The ducks however flocked away from the little humans. It was a bit sad as many of these ducks are ducks we hatched over the last two years and those ducks had loved following the kids around. I think this showed the children though that ducks do not have long memories. With how friendly the chickens where to strangers on the other hand the kids are finally excited about chicken eggs rather than duck eggs to hatch.

Hopefully when we are back on the farm in a month or so, returning little chicks and the incubator the weather will be nice and sunny! Even in the gloom though there was just such beauty on the farm and I am so thankful to Brenda and her husband for all they do for the homeschool community.
