Disney Pixar’s COCO is everything one could want it to be. It is a glimpse into a beautiful culture with old traditions and shares truths about the very essence of family.

From fables and myths to places of pure imagination to cultural beliefs, Disney and Pixar bring so much to life. The depths they reached to make “home” for Miguel as real for us all as possible is fantastic. You can tell that all the little details mattered!

This is a clip explaining how COCO was created and the research behind the movie and it worth the watch!

The closest my family has ever gotten to Mexico was living in El Paso TX. Getting to see just a bit of a culture so much older than any I connect to was humbling. I found myself loving how connected families were and how important their traditions are to them was just so beautiful. Of course my Mexican American friends were quick to point out the harder sides to tight family and everyone always knowing your business and it then being their business and I got to witness it a few times. I found it amusing then, and this movie made me think of those times and smile. Goodness change is hard, one thing should stay the same when ever possible, a tight family!

COCO movie review

Without giving the movie away, I feel like there is something for everyone. We laughed, laughed some more, and then we saw the connections, and then a lot of us, so many in the theater actually, cried. While my 7 year old daughter wasn’t moved to tears, I was. My 18 year old daughter had all the feels too. She had near been jumping out of her seat before the big revel as she saw it coming and that was really exciting to her. Of course the sad parts…. one after another…. but in the end, think picked up, and the joy…. goodness it did the heart good. We left the movie just in love with with it.

I think you will love COCO too!

Too often in our society the elderly are forgotten about even though they are still alive. I love how in this movie Miguel talks to his great grandmother about everything, even if she doesn’t always appear to understand everything. The tender care of the whole family is so loving and something I wish for everyone. It is a beautiful example for all children. There are many fantastic things about this movie, but the family love and togetherness is the best part for me.

I think my 7 year old loved the animals and spirit guides the best though!

We will for sure be getting this movie for the collection!

Hug your loved ones, young and old, and tell them all the stories.

My daughter wants to see this movie (she’s 18!). I have to admit, I wasn’t quite sure I understood what the movie was about from the first trailer I saw months ago. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

My 18 year old loved it too and I know what you mean about it being a bit confusing from the trailers. Pixar though never ever lets us down and the depth of this movie is amazing, just can’t fit it into a trailer!

I wasn’t sure if this movie was something we’d be interested in seeing (going to a movie is a rarity for us as we are EXTREMELY frugal and even matinees are a frivolous expenditure to us). BUT, after reading this write-up, I am leaning toward the splurge.

    Thanks for writing this!

We are looking forward to going to see this one! We don’t get to the movies often but we’re going to try to make this happen. 🙂

I saw the trailer for this and wasn’t really sure if I’d take my kids to see it. We do LOVE Pixar movies but we just weren’t sure about this one. However, from your review, it seems like a perfect family movie. We live in northern Minnesota so we can use all the exposure to other cultures that we can get! 😉 Thanks for highlighting all the reasons it makes a good family movie! I think this will be a better use of our Friday than shopping! 🙂
